The Sound of All Things Bad
The sound comes without warning. What the sound is cannot quite be made out - it is at once artificial and natural, bestial and mechanical, rumbling and roaring and crunching, shattering and crashing and screaming. Everything about it feels like a threat, warning of danger. The cacophony of noise reaches throughout the entire Void, loud and inescapable, the mangling and clashing of different sounds leaving each individual with a different idea of what it could possibly have been. It sounds different to everyone, each person able to pick out a part of the sound that ties to their own fears.

What if...?

How long the sound lasts would depend on how the individual perceives time. It might last for seconds, or it might last for minutes, but once it stops it does not repeat. Where it came from or what it is does not become the slightest bit clearer, and people are left to only speculate.

Disaster
No one can quite be sure what has prompted them to remember that day. It might have been that noise of approaching doom, or perhaps it is seeing the crumbling ruins of Hammerlocke itself. Once a stray memory surfaces, it is easy enough to look into the details and recall in full the vivid memory of Hammerlocke’s destruction - the ‘truth’ of what caused the mountainside city to crumble into ruins, as so many have wondered since their first appearance. Though the memory is clear and detailed, vivid enough to have been witnessed in person, it is out of place and does not belong, and anyone who can recall the events knows it.

Attempting to discuss the matter will soon reveal that while others recall the event with similar clarity, the details vary from person to person. Over time, their own memory changes and adapts, occasionally changing to something new entirely, yet the original is never completely forgotten. Memory is a strange and fickle thing, so easy to influence and manipulate, that the truth is difficult to find.

While memories differ from person to person, there are three particular tales that recur:

From the Sky

Though the sky above did not change from its paper-like blank white, the land grew darker and darker as though cast in shadow. The source of the shadow was clear: above, slowly descending towards the wings of the castle, was... something. Something immense, yet shrouded in crackling storm clouds.

As it continued to grow closer and closer, something in the clouds began to swell. It grew larger and larger, an electric hum of energy in the air, until with a resounding crack it burst and a great shadowy beast fell to the ground, landing with such force that the resulting shockwave shook the earth and tore through the stone buildings, causing so much of the city to tumble in an instant. It moves, and it screeches, raising its head up as the great storm above continues to swell and crackle.

This would not be the only beast.

(Based upon: Meteor, the Lunar Cry, and the Darkest Day)
The Battlefield

It was never clear why the fighting eventually made its way to this defenseless city, but it came without warning. The chaos was heralded only by explosions as the city walls were blasted through by tanks that had somehow made their way along the treacherous and narrow mountain path that simply was not meant for such heavy machines. The thundering explosions and the collapse of buildings could surely be heard for miles, and people and animals alike were quick to flee.

Though they reached Hammerlocke first, the tanks seemed like nothing compared to the enemy. The enormous shadowy monstrosity that swooped in from the sky seemed to be made from far more advanced technology. Even just the one towering machine, as large as the castle falling to ruins beneath its feet as it lands, proves deadly as it fires upon the approaching tanks, blasting them all to pieces within an instant before turning fire on whichever buildings remain standing.

(Based upon: Tanks, and Reapers)
The Mysterious Storm

There had been no way to predict the change in the weather, never mind how destructive it would prove. One moment, everything had been still and quiet, and the next the city was assailed by howling, violent winds and freezing, glittering snow and ice. Though the city was built of stone and had stood the test of time for centuries, it could not stand against these combined forces. The only shelter was underground, for the furious storm was so powerful it could rip through earth, lift up and fling any object in its path with devastating force, shattering windows and toppling buildings.

Propelled by such force, the ice and hail proved destructive in its own right. As the storm froze everything in its path, the hailstones became like bullets and great chunks of ice became missiles. By the time the winds began to grow calm, there was little left standing.

Something about the storm seemed somehow unnatural, but where it came from was anyone’s guess. Some, however, may have spied a vague figure through the tempest, of unclear appearance but its presence somehow threatening.

(Based upon: Weather, El shortage, and Diamond Dust)

Misplaced Memories
Worries about whatever disaster must have befallen the ruined city of Hammerlocke aside, people quickly become aware that memories of the disaster are not the only invasive, foreign memories. How the other memories come to them seems, on the surface, to be very similar: a connected thought occurs, and upon realizing the memory is not theirs, people are compelled to think more about it until the memory is uncovered in full detail. Unlike the memory of the disaster, however, this one quite clearly belongs to someone else. Someone who is here.

On puzzling this out, some might find they have more than one stray memory sitting in their minds. More importantly, however, is the feeling that something from their own memory is missing, and whatever memory is missing feels like it is something important. It could just be their own phone number, or it could be their name, or the face of whoever is most important to them. It could be something small, it could be something big, but all people know is that it’s something important and it’s gone.

There is no clear, immediate answer as to what people can do about their lost memories. With regards to their new memories, however, the path might seem a tiny bit clearer, for surely it seems a bit unfair that they can see into someone’s past in such a manner without their knowing. Perhaps it’s best to talk to them about it?

Although the lost memory is not always the same as the ones borrowed, taking the memory back to its source and prompting them to discuss and think about it proves a great help - as they talk, the invasive memory leaves, a lost memory is restored, and those who succeed are able to tell others the solution.

While the invasive memory is gone, people can still recall having it, and can still recall the details, but they will no longer remember it from the other’s point of view. Perhaps it might change how they see each other from now on?

[ normally izumi would be up and about exploring this world, familiarizing himself with how things work around here, but this time he's staying in at their (TERRIBLY) shared apartment, secretly nursing a sore back and arm. fucking bakugou, man...

at least wounds heal over time, so no need to stress over concealers and the like till then. moving around is tough, and not letting leo know of a blunder like this is even tougher, but he'll handle it. he always have.

so when leo comes barging in, he'll find izumi curled up on the bed, eyes strained shut while he covers his ears with his hands. at least he's not wincing from the soreness of his body yet. ]

Who hasn't heard of that?! Ugh, I'm trying to sleep here!

[ "but sleep isn't a concept --" shut the fuck up. what if he wants to go back to sleep to get ahold of those memories once more? especially the one where he met mikejima just now...... ]

[ i mean if an idol academy's kitchens and a certain blue-eyed brunette of a producer is anything familiar to bakugou, it's very much fair game. but not everything is free real estate in this world. ]

Some fuckin'... speech you made in front of your classmates? If you can even call that a speech. Moreover, can you like, let go of me first?!

[ blease he doesn't wanna learn that he can heal overtime like this ]

"How am I supposed to know what I forgot if I can't even recall them in the first place..."

Ah yes, that one memory conundrum. Sigh.

"But if you're here, that must mean you forgot something too, right? Unless you're just here for sightseeing... Just going through this place pisses me off a bit, honestly."

[Did that work...? So far it seems like describing the memory helps to "give" it back, which is good, because he's not sure how else he would do that.]

[Rhys he remembers clearly, if not the memory she's describing... the thought of someone trying to hurt Rhys still makes his chest tight, even if things are different now. Her description is vague, but there's something...]

What things did he say?

[That part feels important. Maybe if he hears that, he can remember the rest.]

Oh... that's a thing.

[Ahsoka's memories were even more scrambled than hers were. Uh... that was definitely a thing. she wasn't quite sure how to react to that. It took her a second to fold her arms and consider before finally just shrugging. She could cope, and if she'd picked up anything, this one would too. She seemed a pretty tough one.]

Hooookay. I'm Parsee and we met a little bit ago. Just in case you've forgotten, you're Ahsoka and I barely understand some of the stuff you talk about. You're always hoping I'll be a better person.

Still not sure why... but you seem convinced I can be. [Shruuuug] The guy I remember had this beam sword thing. Red. two bladed. used it like a staff. You had a couple blue ones. single bladed. You use them...

Honestly, you use them a bit like a samurai, though they usually switch to the shorter blade if they're using the daisho.

[Yeah, the well-mannered, caring hero side wasn't something she doubted. It was the persona that confused her at times. It as so blindingly "protagonist" that it felt very over the top and extra. Unecessary, though if he was peacocking to distract... it made more sense.]

So, take this as you will... but whatever you were fighting? It isn't here, even if people showed up here. You don't have to pretend. And it might ... do you good to drop the act once in a while. It's gotta be a strain.

[She shrugged. He wasn't usually as bad as he'd been at the casinao heist, though. So he wasn't 'on' 100% at least.]

Marisa's usually fighting someone. What did they look like and where was it?

[Funny story. The memory of her was clear enough and her powers weren't at work other than the fuzzier parts of the memory itself, but Parsee probably wouldn't clearly remember Koishi.

Not even if she got the memory back. That was just how she was. she'd remember fragments, however.]

...

That asshole always seems to miraculously have the right card for the right moment, doesn't he? "The Heart of the Cards" or some bullshit?

[It's called deck fishing tactics. Yugi was a fucking blue deck master when it came to getting just the right fucking card at the right fucking time. He just couched it in a love of the game or some other crap.]

He could definitely talk a god to sleep. [She grunted.] Marisa's got a different kind of arrogance. Real proud of her magical skills, but she's a glorified thief. Always hunting for new baubles and trinkets to make herself more powerful, sneaking into places she shouldn't. Does shit because she gets bored. I'll bet you bottom dollar that's exactly what got her involved to start in this.

A danmaku uses spells sealed in disposable charms a lot. Reimu's the expert. But since she writes the damned things herself for a living of course she would be.

Green hair... Green hair... Green hair...

[There was a visible reaction as she tried to remember something. Her hands went up to grip her hair and she fought with it. It wasn't painful other than the strain of trying it. It was like there wasn't enough an impression to really recall so she was searching memory banks for something, anything.

Like trying to remember the individual memory of a sparrow you saw twenty years ago on a random day.]

Not... Sanae... she's not always giggling like that. Everyone knows Reimu's rival anyway.

[Who had green hair... why did she feel a feeling of incomprehensible dread coming over her. Why couldn't she remember her ... er... oh gods...]

Three eyes... one of them closed.

Why. Can't. I. REMEMBER?!?

[She remembered them all. One glance, and she could tell you everything about someone that was better than her. It was her entire existence, to know why people were jealous of each other, why she was jealous of them. But she couldn't... couldn't fucking...

It was coming to her. She looked actually like she was in pain, straining. Koishi had lost that day. Because of that, she'd gone back to being little old forgotten Koishi. But a garbled, croaking sound came to her voice.]

Koi...shi. Ko...meiji... the Satori's ... s...sister. Fuck, that girl. Nobody remembers her. She's one of the scariest people you'll ever see in Gensokyo, if you ever see her. Carries around a knife all the time.

Nobody knows if it's actually a squeak toy.

[She wasn't exaggerating. Sometimes it was a squeak toy. Sometimes.]

She's dangerous. Dangerous in ways Marisa isn't. Not raw power. Just... you'd never know she was there until it was too late.

[She rested her head against his chestplate half collapsing into him as she curled her arms around him. She could feel her memories starting to come back to her. His weren't entirely going away, but they were getting easier to compartmentalize.]

01010100 01101000 01100001 01101110 01101011 00100000 01111001 01101111 01110101

[She didn't realize she'd said that in binary, or in a garbled, accented sound that would be understandable as binary. 'Thank you.' She probably wouldn't really ever be able to talk in binary, but remembering how Legion thought was having a bit of a weird effect on her. She wasn't sure how to properly explain or understand it at the moment.]

I... think I hate the Quarians, Legion.

[She knew that Legion didn't seem really able to hate, but she was. And she did not like what they'd doe, not one bit.]

[It all happened so suddenly... a cacophonous sound that brought everything temporarily to a standstill. Whatever had caused it either had to be massive or it was bending the shaky physics here to it's advantage. Mind awash with thoughts, some of then clearly not of his own, Kaiba set out to find some answers, or at least to compare notes with the others. Not one of his favorite pastimes but there was no way to avoid it now.

At this point he didn't care who he ran into first.

What was with all that preachy nonsense? Thinking to himself about one memory inparticuliar. Sure, it wouldn't be the first time, nor likely the last that someone told him what his destiny had in store for him but there were some details that hadn't made sense. Like- he hadn't technically been a student since he left Domino High.

"Hand over hand, huh? That's fine, bring it on."

★☆★

[It's been a long "day", filled with emotional exchanges between people as they all try to retrieve their missing memories. Not all have been as heavy as some of the others, and Tifa's noticed a pattern with the ones she's given, in that a lot of them have been more distressing than some of the memories she's received, which is why she approaches most of these conversations with some reluctance.

These sorts of things are easily softened over food and drinks, so Tifa's invited Ahsoka to join her down in Wall Market, at the barbecue booth she's named Strife's Bites, having grilled some beef skewers for the two of them. Where the meat has been coming from, she has no idea, but if this world is going to continue to restock without her having to ask, then she's going to take advantage of it while she can!

Not that she needs to soften the blow of this particular memory. It seems to be a happy one—Ahsoka's first time meeting her... master? She can only assume as much, based on the short conversation.]

So, a Padawan is like a student, yeah?

"Nice catch!"

★☆★

[Tifa doesn't appreciate someone strolling up to her and jamming a finger at her chest, and even less so being accused of having anything to do with these jumbled and missing memories, so when Katsuki approaches her in the lobby of Merlaut just as she's coming back from another talk, she takes him by his wrist and twists it just enough to gain a little control beneath her firm grip, anger rising in her eyes.]

Don't just walk up to people thinking they've got any clue what's going on.

[Her voice is as sharp as her expression when she flings his hand back at him.]

Pretty sure I've got one of yours too, and I'm just as clueless as you are.

[Well, this is a great introduction.]

[ parsee gets her to smile just with that "barely understand" part, though she feels a little bad about it. she doesn't know why but it all sounds vaguely familiar, so surely that's a good sign of things. means this isn't all a lost cause. ]

So I'm a samurai. That's cool.

[ whatever a samurai even is. the mention of the blades does itch something in the back of her mind. beam swords... there's a word for them on the tip of her tongue, but it isn't coming out. ]

It seems you have a memory of mine, and I also have one of yours. You were on a bridge, much like this one, and there was a party going on. Seemed like you had... maybe not friends, but people you knew who were there. You didn't seem to like them very much.

[ rex, rex, rex. she keeps his name in the forefront of her mind, letting it solidify. maybe then her mind can truly grasp at it.

but while that works, she also keeps herself focused on helping cole. he's also missing parts of himself, though it's hard to say this is a memory he would want back. she closes her eyes, hesitating, knowing what she's about to recount will bring him pain.
]

You were desperate to protect Rhys no matter what the cost. The man after you... he claimed you were a demon, pretending to be real.

[ she says with the sort of distaste that would hopefully indicate she doesn't believe those words. cole did at the end of the memory, but he was confused by the malicious intentions of his attacker. it isn't true. ]
starshower: (078)

[personal profile] starshower 2020-09-22 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's Yuugi, huh?

[Knowing that, to Tifa it sounds like Yuugi just really wanted to be friends, and despite what Parsee says about her, deep down, she kind of enjoyed that company.

... Especially when she considers the rest of the memory, and Parsee's commentary on it.

She joins Parsee, leaning next to her against the pillar.]

Did that bother you? The way people treated the bridge?

[It's an assumption she's made on her own, with how deeply negative she felt in that memory. Jealousy. More than she's ever felt on her own.]

[Tifa waits, the smile that's sat across her expression now fading with every passing moment, while Aerith tries to find the right words to express what she saw. And then, she hears Jessie's name, and the pit of her stomach drops.]

Oh... [is all she says at first, finding her knees suddenly weakened under her weight, and she drops down on the bed, gaze turned down to her hands clasping together.] You saw that, huh?

[Not exactly what she was expecting, especially when she had seen Cloud on stage through Aerith's eyes, but... it's probably better that she holds off on that for now.

She remembers every last word of that moment, while Jessie lay in Cloud's arms. Her whole world had turned blurry through tears, and the sounds of gunshots and explosions turning to nothing but muffled background noise in her head. "Tifa's crying," she'd pointed out, and when she tried to speak, she could only sob. She can easily recall the distraught look on her face at that, thinking that she'd done something wrong. She had. She did. She was reckless.]

Jessie is... [A friend. Family.] We lost her that night.

[Her head finally lifts to look up at Aerith.]

After I left you and Wedge, Cloud and I found her buried underneath pieces of the tower. I don't know how it happened, but by the time we got to her, it was too late.

[ ... ]

I'm sorry you had to see that, Aerith.
anciently: (and we stood tall)

[personal profile] anciently 2020-09-22 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh - good. We can trade, then...I hope.

[ She smiles faintly, but this whole thing is...clearly weighing on her. It's not every day that you're forced to carry other people's memories, after all. ]

Um...do you want to start, or should I? [ Aerith crosses, then uncrosses her arms: considering. ] I'm not sure if it'll go back to normal if we talk about it, or if there's anything else we have to do...but, talking's a start, right?
anciently: (and remembered our own land)

[personal profile] anciently 2020-09-22 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe. [ The dance, the dress, the failed high-five, and much more. She shrugs mysteriously, in her usual way, at his question. ] So...it's actually something from a long time ago. With, um - your mom?

[ A blonde woman from before he became a SOLDIER. She keeps her tone and expression light, but... ]

She seems sweet. [ "Seemed." Aerith offers a little smile, leaning in to study his face. ] And definitely interested in helping you find a girlfriend! Don't worry, though; the memory didn't get too personal.

[ Just a cute, little moment between the two. One that she has to imagine he cherishes, the way that she does with her early memories of her own birth mother. ]
anciently: (but i won't rot)

[personal profile] anciently 2020-09-22 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah? What's the original name? [ She will, of course, be trying to read over his shoulder.

Aerith has her own strange, unbidden memories prickling inside her mind, but...they'll get to that. ]

I wonder what it got mixed up with? Who it belongs to, that is. [ More memory jumbles! She's sensing a theme, here... ]

[ and while Raihan might know a little more about it by virtue of experience, the gap between his knowledge and Zack's probably isn't all that wide. no one around here has any idea why things are the way they are, this instance included. ]

Your guess is as good as mine. I couldn't tell where it was coming from...

[ Raihan steps in, getting a glance through the window to see if he can see anything from that angle. it doesn't look like anything is shaken up, but that noise... it was violent.

he looks Zack over for a moment, sizing him up. he hasn't seen him around before, but that sword on his back sure makes him look capable enough... ]

Care to do some recon with us? [ "us" referring to him and the creature that's staring him down from the doorway, of course. he's worried about the situation, but that doesn't keep him from smiling. ] It could be dangerous, but the more eyes out there, the better.
starshower: (113)

[personal profile] starshower 2020-09-22 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh? Eos?

[Tifa knows the answer to his question, but she still pauses to try pinpointing the location in her head. There's nowhere on her world that she can think of with that name, but that similarity is eerily similar. There aren't many worlds out there that share beasts or summons like that, so maybe... somewhere... it exists. Just not anywhere that she knows.]

No. Gaia's the name of the planet, but I grew up in a village called Nibelheim. Moved to Midgar after that. Those names don't ring a bell?
anciently: (but i won't rot)

[personal profile] anciently 2020-09-22 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Whew - thanks. [ She thinks nothing of him lending her a hand because Aerith knows nothing of Katsuki's attitude, and so she offers a little smile and a nod. ]

Good question... Someone with a powerful memory: that's for sure. [ Fortunately, she has no reason to bring up Meteor with this complete stranger, or...anybody. Except Sephiroth, maybe, odd as that is. ] I don't know who it could be, though...

[ It doesn't seem like anything Sephiroth is connected to, but she also can't rule it out. He's dangerously unpredictable in that way. ]

I guess you don't have any guesses?
anciently: (on my knees and out of luck)

[personal profile] anciently 2020-09-22 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay. [ Aerith nods, following Raihan and grabbing her own food and drink as they go. She isn't sure what memory he ended up with, of course, but...based on his lighter attitude, it's hopefully nothing too unpleasant. ]

Well... [ Her gaze drifts to Duraludon, as it usually does when she's near the Pokemon, and she offers a little smile to it before turning back to its trainer. ] It was that stadium - Hammerlocke. Back the way you remember it, I'm sure, rather than it all falling apart.

[ It's easier than ever to see why the place in its current state would bother him. ]

You were talking to a group of kids about...well, a lot of stuff! I'm not sure I understood most of it, but I think you were trying to help them to become better trainers, right? And at the end, you should them more of your own Pokemon. [ Aerith smiles more broadly, leaning forward somewhat with enthusiasm. ] I don't know anything about your world, but those dragons were really something! It's incredible that you're able to work with them and call them your friends.
anciently: (not this mind and not this heart)

[personal profile] anciently 2020-09-22 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. [ Ugh. She's been avoiding him as much as possible, but there aren't a lot of people here who could also have memories of Hojo, and she knows already that it isn't her friends'. Which means...

Aerith utters a short sigh, balling her fists at her sides. ]

I have some memories of Hojo, but they aren't mine. And I don't want them.

[ Obviously. She doesn't even want her own memories of the man. ]

Which means you have something that belongs to me. [ Which she feels more than a little weird about. ] What did you see?
