The Sound of All Things Bad
The sound comes without warning. What the sound is cannot quite be made out - it is at once artificial and natural, bestial and mechanical, rumbling and roaring and crunching, shattering and crashing and screaming. Everything about it feels like a threat, warning of danger. The cacophony of noise reaches throughout the entire Void, loud and inescapable, the mangling and clashing of different sounds leaving each individual with a different idea of what it could possibly have been. It sounds different to everyone, each person able to pick out a part of the sound that ties to their own fears.

What if...?

How long the sound lasts would depend on how the individual perceives time. It might last for seconds, or it might last for minutes, but once it stops it does not repeat. Where it came from or what it is does not become the slightest bit clearer, and people are left to only speculate.

Disaster
No one can quite be sure what has prompted them to remember that day. It might have been that noise of approaching doom, or perhaps it is seeing the crumbling ruins of Hammerlocke itself. Once a stray memory surfaces, it is easy enough to look into the details and recall in full the vivid memory of Hammerlocke’s destruction - the ‘truth’ of what caused the mountainside city to crumble into ruins, as so many have wondered since their first appearance. Though the memory is clear and detailed, vivid enough to have been witnessed in person, it is out of place and does not belong, and anyone who can recall the events knows it.

Attempting to discuss the matter will soon reveal that while others recall the event with similar clarity, the details vary from person to person. Over time, their own memory changes and adapts, occasionally changing to something new entirely, yet the original is never completely forgotten. Memory is a strange and fickle thing, so easy to influence and manipulate, that the truth is difficult to find.

While memories differ from person to person, there are three particular tales that recur:

From the Sky

Though the sky above did not change from its paper-like blank white, the land grew darker and darker as though cast in shadow. The source of the shadow was clear: above, slowly descending towards the wings of the castle, was... something. Something immense, yet shrouded in crackling storm clouds.

As it continued to grow closer and closer, something in the clouds began to swell. It grew larger and larger, an electric hum of energy in the air, until with a resounding crack it burst and a great shadowy beast fell to the ground, landing with such force that the resulting shockwave shook the earth and tore through the stone buildings, causing so much of the city to tumble in an instant. It moves, and it screeches, raising its head up as the great storm above continues to swell and crackle.

This would not be the only beast.

(Based upon: Meteor, the Lunar Cry, and the Darkest Day)
The Battlefield

It was never clear why the fighting eventually made its way to this defenseless city, but it came without warning. The chaos was heralded only by explosions as the city walls were blasted through by tanks that had somehow made their way along the treacherous and narrow mountain path that simply was not meant for such heavy machines. The thundering explosions and the collapse of buildings could surely be heard for miles, and people and animals alike were quick to flee.

Though they reached Hammerlocke first, the tanks seemed like nothing compared to the enemy. The enormous shadowy monstrosity that swooped in from the sky seemed to be made from far more advanced technology. Even just the one towering machine, as large as the castle falling to ruins beneath its feet as it lands, proves deadly as it fires upon the approaching tanks, blasting them all to pieces within an instant before turning fire on whichever buildings remain standing.

(Based upon: Tanks, and Reapers)
The Mysterious Storm

There had been no way to predict the change in the weather, never mind how destructive it would prove. One moment, everything had been still and quiet, and the next the city was assailed by howling, violent winds and freezing, glittering snow and ice. Though the city was built of stone and had stood the test of time for centuries, it could not stand against these combined forces. The only shelter was underground, for the furious storm was so powerful it could rip through earth, lift up and fling any object in its path with devastating force, shattering windows and toppling buildings.

Propelled by such force, the ice and hail proved destructive in its own right. As the storm froze everything in its path, the hailstones became like bullets and great chunks of ice became missiles. By the time the winds began to grow calm, there was little left standing.

Something about the storm seemed somehow unnatural, but where it came from was anyone’s guess. Some, however, may have spied a vague figure through the tempest, of unclear appearance but its presence somehow threatening.

(Based upon: Weather, El shortage, and Diamond Dust)

Misplaced Memories
Worries about whatever disaster must have befallen the ruined city of Hammerlocke aside, people quickly become aware that memories of the disaster are not the only invasive, foreign memories. How the other memories come to them seems, on the surface, to be very similar: a connected thought occurs, and upon realizing the memory is not theirs, people are compelled to think more about it until the memory is uncovered in full detail. Unlike the memory of the disaster, however, this one quite clearly belongs to someone else. Someone who is here.

On puzzling this out, some might find they have more than one stray memory sitting in their minds. More importantly, however, is the feeling that something from their own memory is missing, and whatever memory is missing feels like it is something important. It could just be their own phone number, or it could be their name, or the face of whoever is most important to them. It could be something small, it could be something big, but all people know is that it’s something important and it’s gone.

There is no clear, immediate answer as to what people can do about their lost memories. With regards to their new memories, however, the path might seem a tiny bit clearer, for surely it seems a bit unfair that they can see into someone’s past in such a manner without their knowing. Perhaps it’s best to talk to them about it?

Although the lost memory is not always the same as the ones borrowed, taking the memory back to its source and prompting them to discuss and think about it proves a great help - as they talk, the invasive memory leaves, a lost memory is restored, and those who succeed are able to tell others the solution.

While the invasive memory is gone, people can still recall having it, and can still recall the details, but they will no longer remember it from the other’s point of view. Perhaps it might change how they see each other from now on?

[ Rinoa recognizes the owner of the memory almost as soon as she recognizes it's not one of her own. Not only is there the shrine, the bridge, and the sentient buckets - Tsukumogami? she wonders - but there's also the overwhelming feeling of jealousy, strong enough that she can feel her blood boiling with it.

Is this what it's like, then? To be a spirit of jealousy?

Before Rinoa looks for Parsee, she stops by Heavenly Blanc, getting a bottle of liquor from the shelf before heading back down toward the other's bridge. She may not be Yuugi, but something about the memory stood out to her - Parsee was grateful for the company. Perhaps Rinoa can provide it along with helping the other to get her memory back.

And maybe the hashihime has one of hers, too. After all, it feels like there's a gap in her own mind, something that should be there but isn't, a lightness where Rinoa's sure something heavy is meant to be.

Emerging from the mountain, she looks around as she heads down the path to the bridge. ]

Izumi whirls around as a... rather flowery man approaches him. Well, that's his own fault for ranting in a public place anyway. He's tempted to tell this man to buzz off, but -

"It's this... Ugh, I don't even know where to begin with this. I got this stupid memory thing and I just got mad because it's in line with my interests, I guess. But who wanted to be an Internet idol in this day and age, anyway?" he fumes, crossing his arms in a huff.

"Is this kind of phenomenon common in this world? Like, I didn't sign up for getting bombarded with some rando's memories in the first place. I don't even know where to look, since I'm still kinda new here."

Yep, he sure is one of those newcomers. And there is a reason why he immediately nyoomed to this location once it appeared, but that's a story for another time.

[ "We". That's weird shit, but the thing is a machine (?) so...whatever. Katsuki scowls a little, looking them up and down as he simmers in misplaced fear anger. ]

[ That fear, those choices Katsuki doesn't remember making - they're nothing he ever shared with Deku. There was no reason to explain what it had been like or felt like, his hands pressed to wounds he couldn't allow to progress.

He doesn't remember it now, but he's just as irritable as ever. He remembers enough about Deku even with memories missing. They've known one another for too long for that not to be true. ]

Oh yeah?! Then how do you explain all of this?!

[ It's Deku's fault. ]

[ izumi hates a Lot of things, like the pessimistic fucker that he is. really, he can count the ones that he can admit to like with the fingers on his hand. one of the things he absolutely hated was his privacy and boundaries getting crossed, so it's only natural that he too would hate this strange phenomena everyone's experiencing in this world.

but he didn't count getting approached by some guy whose memory appeared in his line of vision one day, so at least he can get that squared away. though the way this little shit just intruded his personal space with a jab on his chest while screaming into his ear... well.

izumi's rage can shift from boiling hot to freezing cold, and right now he's feeling the latter. his hand grabs at bakugou's wrist in a vice grip, his lips twisting into a rather menacing smile. ohhhhh man it's been so long since he gets to pick on what seems to be a bitty junior, this is going to be fun-- ]

Oi. Bold of you to get all up in my face with an attitude like that. Don't you have any respect?

[ he tightens his grip. obviously he can't break this guy's wrist with his noodle arms but this should probably be enough to show him that he is not meant to be crossed like this. ]

And FYI, I'm new here. Not that your little peabrain would register that even with all this shit's going on. So why don't you fucking behave and give ourselves some space, will you?

[ Okay, I'm sorry, how good is Izumi at like...fighting for real? For example, is he actually able to avoid being flipped onto the ground by someone who has been training in hand to hand combat since he was like, a small child?

Katsuki may not know anything about being an idol, but someone grabbing his wrist tightly like that will immediately get an actual physical response, and Katsuki's, uhhh, extremely leanly muscled and even without his Quirk functioning he's strong and decidedly geared to combat.

So, uh, this may not go so hot for Izumi since his skills are I believe less Fighting Hero style? ]

Oi.

[ oh he's a fucking noodle with zero combat skills. anyone with above average physical prowess can simply pull him apart like a goddamn twizzler and get it over with. but he's not about to be told around by some rando he doesn't know, even if he kinda sorta looks like the guy he just saw in his head?

but before he can get a word in, his wrist gets grabbed instead, and in a split second he's on the ground wincing in pain. he sucks a breath through his teeth, and he still has the gall to throw a glare at bakugou.

ah, if only looks could kill. too bad death is not a concept in this world yet. ]

Lay... off me. [ said through gritted teeth. ] I have one of your shit right here in my head, so if you want it back...

[ well. the best thing he can do right now is negotiation. ]

(They are a swarm intelligence. Their thoughts and feelings are the combination of communications between programs, all of which were distressed in the memory he recieved.)

We are Legion, relict.

(Anger is often a fear response--the fury as he lashed out against his suffocating prison--so it's not much difference.)

Bakugou.

[ Or Katsuki; he'll take either, but "relict" is weird and doesn't describe him.

He's not sure what Legion is speaking about, specifically. His "allies" have always fought hard for him...even when he didn't fucking want them to. ]

...You've got messed up relationships with your own allies.

BLUE (double trouble)

[personal profile] thunderwave 2020-09-20 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
[ the memory begins in a place very familiar, to blue -- the dragon's den of blackthorn city, along with two people -- clair and lance, who are walking rather quickly toward the temple central to the den, with clair speaking up, sounding annoyed: ]

Who could have even gotten in here without permission from one of us?

I don't know. [ the response doesn't sound too bothered, on lance's part. if anything, he sounds curious, as he quickly steps down onto the wooden bridge that leads to the temple. ] But whoever it is ticked Grandfather off enough to actually use his PokeGear, for once.

I didn't even know we have service in here. [ comes clair's grumble, which prompts a quick grin, from lance . . . and as the two round the corner, lance's expression shifts from confusion to something a bit more warm, as two boys come into view -- who will also look very familiar.

the following scene plays out, which results in a double battle between the four trainers. it's interesting, to see the difference between the two teams. ethan and silver rely on one another in order to battle, but clair and lance are independent. not in terms of not being able to work together, but the two seem to know what the other is going to do so well that they compliment each other without even realizing it. every all-out attack by lance is quickly followed up with a second punch by clair, and vice versa. more than once, silver and ethan scramble to counteract their team.

but eventually, after a close-fought battle, ethan and silver are the victors and (general) pleasantries are exchange, lance leaves the temple area.

whatever clair says to ethan and silver is not heard, but soon, she catches up with her cousin, and once they are properly out of earshot, she says, with no small amount of frustration: ]

What was that?

Incredible, aren't they? [ his tone is warm, as he steps onto the rocky path leading out of the den. ] I have to admit, I doubted Silver's ability to truly bond with his Pokemon when I first met him, but I think he will wind up being a fine --

Do you not respect me? [ the interruption clearly catches lance by surprise, and he pauses in his walk to look at clair, who looks clearly annoyed, her fists at her sides. it's also very clear that saying this at all is difficult; for all of her blustering and bravado, confronting lance is something she doesn't do very often. ] Am I just a second thought, to you?

What are you talking about? [ he doesn't sound annoyed, but legitimately confused, his brow furrowing. ] Of course I respect you. You are like a sister to me, and --

You would rather have me partner with the son of Giovanni than pick me as your equal battle partner? [ again, the interruption comes quick and cold, and lance's expression shifts from confusion to mild exasperation, but he remains quiet, to allow clair to finish. ] Why, because I'm not a Champion?

Because I thought it would be an interesting challenge, and I didn't think it was fair to humiliate Silver in front of his rival and the top Gym Leader in Johto. [ his tone is even, but the comment only causes clair to roll her eyes and step backwards, further down the path leading out of the den, and lance exhales in a sigh to quickly follow after his cousin. ] Clair, I am sorry, but --

There is no 'but,' Lance, you're either sorry or you aren't. [ it's said with a rushed exhale, almost a huff, but clair stops walking away to turn to lance with a scowl, crossing her arms tightly over her chest. ] Do you want the truth?

I have a feeling I am going to get it regardless of what I say. [ lance says, a little tiredly, but he stops when clair does before gesturing toward her with a slight frown. ] I want to apologize, but I need to know what I did wrong so I can avoid doing it again. That is all I wanted to say.

[ clair purses her lips tightly before her fingers dig into her forearms, clearly trying to find something within to say what she wants to say . . . but she soon spits it out, her tone frustrated: ]

You have no idea what it's like, being related to you. [ the comment catches lance by surprise, clearly -- he blinks, startled by the response, before his expression settles into something of an understanding as clair continues. ] I have worked just as hard as you have, but still haven't earned Grandfather's blessing. People come to my city, and my Gym, because they're enamored with you. Lance, the Dragon Master, the world's greatest trainer, because everything is just -- so easy for you, that --

What part of my life is easy? [ it's a quiet interruption, but an interruption all the same, and while lance's tone hasn't changed in the conversation, it's clear that clair seems to feel she's stumbled over a line she shouldn't have crossed, because she stops venting, averting her eyes. she also doesn't answer lance's question, which hangs in the air -- and lance doesn't pursue it, instead sighing to himself and shifting his gaze back the way they came, toward the direction of the dragon's den. ] I came home because I needed a break.

I know that. [ it's said shortly, almost defensively. ] And you deserve one, but --

I am tired of battling with something large at stake; I wanted to have fun. [ the interruption surprises clair, who blinks at the admission, and falls silent to allow lance to continue. ] Ethan and I had battled together in Mahogany Town, and I thought it would be nice to have a fun experience, rather than something clouded by Team Rocket. That was all I meant, by the suggestion. [ and his gaze returns to clair, with a frown. ] I apologize that I hurt your feelings; I have always valued and respected you the most, out of anyone I have ever met. You do know that, don't you?

[ there's a silence, as clair mulls that over. and soon, she says, somewhat sullenly: ]

It was fun. [ the comment is said begrudgingly, rolling her eyes to the side as lance's expression shifts from apologetic to warm; he's clearly relieved, that clair seems to have let go of some of that frustration with him. ] Next time, if there is a next time, and if you keep inviting these worthless brats to our home, I'm your first choice.

They are not worthless brats, and I did not invite Silver to Blackthorn; he followed me here. [ the correction is swift, but lance soon resumes his walk with clair, as they head out of the den. but as they leave, lance adds, with a slight bump of his shoulder as they walk against hers: ] But of course; you are my first choice. And I really am sorry, Clair.

I know you are, that's what makes you so annoying. [ the comment is said dismissively, as they leave, and the memory begins to fade. ] I can't stay mad at people like you.

[ end scene! ]

That's just it! I'm not seeing much of anything!

[The problem was that when the Geth were achieving sentience, sensory input was being deprioritized, though there were platforms. When it hit a platform, there were recollections of stupified Quarian faces, terrified researchers.]

Most of this isn't sight. I'm getting flashed images that I assume are your creators freaking the fuck out when you ask them the same question. But most of it... I'm experiencing numbers. I'm not hearing them, not smelling or tasting, not seeing them. They're just being transferred into my head.
