A normal monster's strength relies purely in either it's attack or defense points, but an effect monster will also have it's own attack and defense but also the added benefit of being able to effect something else in the game.
You won't have to memorize the effects, since they are all clearly displayed in the card text.

Generally, Duel Monsters is a two-player game but there are sometimes variations to allow for additional players.
