Oh, Magikarp are capable of learning a lot of new things.

[ buckle up, kid. time for dragon taming 101. ]

Magikarp evolve into Gyarados; I have one, for a partner. They are typically aggressive and hard to control, and lash out more frequently than not.

[ and he holds up his hands, about a foot apart, and slowly spreads his arms, to indicate a massive growth in length. ]

Imagine the creatures in the lake growing to something over twenty feet long and nearly six hundred pounds . . . it is an incredible manifestation of power. There are legends of Gyarados destroying cities and sinking ships . . . very unlike Dragonite, here, who has something of an opposite reputation.

[ AND THEY ARE CUTE AS HECK. but it's clear, in how lance speaks, that he holds a great and deep-seated love and admiration, for these creatures. regardless of gyarados' reputation, lance is absolutely enamored with the beings. ]

Incidentally, the Magikarp in the lake carry the shape of Magikarp, but the temperment of their evolved form, Gyarados . . . which I've never seen before. I hope your encounter was relatively painless; they seem harmless, for the most part.
