Amenities were limited. Much of the wildlife was hostile. Various islands were presided over by "Gods", with motivations that did not always align with our own. The presence of magic resulted in the regular occurrence of anomalous events. There was no centralized government or economy: decisions were made via community vote, and resources and necessary services were managed via volunteers.
(It doesn't necessarily sound like the best place to live in, but Legion clearly seems to miss it.)
