We hereby start the Void Calendar! All over the Void since yesterday, several handwritten notes have been taped or stapled to the Void's most populated areas in the hopes to drive the people to the popular bar/cafe. Heavenly Blanc's exterior has been protected from any upcoming storms by a large awning, and more tables and chairs have been temporarily set to settle any issues of overcrowding on the inside. Upon entering, one will be able greeted by the aroma of curry, although the spices vary from pot to pot, and coffee and alcohol will be served throughout the evening.

Within the interior of the bar, a small space has been divided and cleared out -- next to the jukebox. There, one will find a few microphones resting on their stands, waiting for whoever is brave enough to sing on them to whatever is playing in Heavenly Blanc when the storm hits. Last, but not least, a whiteboard has been visibly placed next to the entrance. It reads: "Names of the Months", and you may either write your own or add sticks to vote on your favorites.

[Akechi's holding his glass, just an eyebrow raised at Kaiba.]

And what, exactly, is your definition of a dead-end job?

Do I really have to define it for you?

[Maybe there was a dictionary in the library Akechi could borrow. After a sigh.]

A dead-end job is a job where there is little or no chance of career development or advancement into a higher paid position. Ie. The point of stagnation, usually involving menial, or tedious tasks with little self-fulfillment or monetary gain.

And that's your definition?

[Akechi doesn't care about the dictionary definition. This is a question about Kaiba himself.]

Would you say that your company provides equal opportunity for advancement to its employees? Or is it a company full of, shall we use your term, "dead-end jobs?"

[Why was there a need for further clarity?]

It's fairly accurate I'd say, so.. yes.

[Eying the other male with suspicion]

Oh, now I see what you're going for here. [Sneering a bit at that and expression darkening] My company employs millions, across the globe and I would defy you to find a better work environment and benefits package. [Um, just don't ask the big five for their opinions on how he treated them. They were hold-overs from his father's reign that he ended up royally screwing over and ejecting from his company post-takeover. Thy totally deserved it though.] Those that are willing to put in the time and dedication do find opportunities for betterment but I don't reward those that aren't deserving.

Of course.

[He flicks a gloved hand carelessly. Work environment? Benefits? He doesn't care about those. They weren't included in the definition.]

My point is simply thus: would you say that, a hard-working person who watches the machines cut out the... it's trading cards, yes? So I presume that you have some kind of mechanization meant to quickly cut the cardstock into pieces. Would you say a person in that position would find their work fulfilling? That they are able to advance to, say, your office?

[He raises his glass, brings it to his lips, and quirks an eyebrow.]

I simply believe that if one is overseeing a company full of "dead-end jobs," one could say that that is, precisely, what a dead-end job is. You're welcome to disagree, of course.

[No they weren't, but by this point Kaiba just thinks the other is looking for faults of any kind, so he's padding the answers]

[Excuse you.

Did you say: machines that cut out the trading cards. This actually warrants a laugh from the brunette, albeit one lacking mirth and sounding more ominous
]

You've mistaken my company for Industrial Illusions, those sorts of jobs are entirely Maximillion Pegasus's problem, not mine. [That was a sometimes tenuous business relationship in itself. That's what happens when someone steals your soul and tries to take over your company.. but currently they were working in collaboration to enhance the game of duel monsters.] He handles the creation of the cards, I provide the technology to bring them to life. [So his boring factory style jobs involve building parts for dueling arenas and duel disks. Kaiba was missing the point.. cough] I should hope that anyone working for Kaiba Corp would take pride in their position, no matter what their designation was. [As for his office.. there can be only himself and Mokuba for President and VP.. so... no] As I said before, if they want to improve their station, there are programs in place to see that they can.

That's not what I do, nor how I see it. I was referring more to retail, or baristas... [Obvious dig, is obvious]

There are arguments to be made about the drudgery of work in front of a computer being comparable to that of factories, but I'm afraid that would be straying from the point.

[His gaze sharpens at the obvious dig. Akechi doesn't care about workers' rights in general, save as a fun talking point to argue with others about, in vaguest notions of how people are treated by the men he worked for and whose careers and lives he destroyed. But he does care deeply for Ren, and he knows Ren cares very much for his job at Leblanc. He's certainly taken to volunteering at Heavenly Blanc very seriously.]

And I believe you are missing mine. I would say that you, by declaring yourself above those who serve to enrich you, remove the fulfillment from the position. I would, in fact, go further to say that a barista, to use your example and your definition, could easily find fulfillment in their work. Whether it's as simple as bringing joy to the general public, or learning the skills necessary to operate their own business in the future.

[Akechi, meanwhile, finally takes a sip from his drink. He's certain Kaiba wouldn't see his detective work as a "dead-end" job, but he himself certainly considers his assassination career, brief as it was, to be such.]

I'm afraid we'll simply find ourselves talking in circles at this rate. Shall we return to the game? If you're quite finished insulting the people who were good enough to organize this, that is.
blue_eyed_obsession: (♙ Give it up)

[personal profile] blue_eyed_obsession 2021-01-08 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
[Got him there. There is a lot of computer work involved and screens to be stared at, but not everything can be perfect.

At the look, Kaiba knows he's struck a nerve and he considers it a minor victory. What a waste of breath this whole conversation has been up to this point. He knows there's some lives that have been adversely effected by his company as well as the ones with more positive returns. There is literally no way to please everyone, and sometimes one job just isn't the right fit for a specific person. It's life, get over it.
]

Show me a business without a hierarchy, do you even hear what you're saying? [There are always going to be those in upper management and those in lower. Not everyone can be at the top. Some people could still find fulfillment in being apart of one of the most successful businesses in the world. That and Akechi was disregarding the pressures that came with maintaining that status. How many lives would be ruined if he personally made a bad business call and his company's value dropped. It wasn't all rosy on the top either. Imbecile.] If they're content with mediocrity that's on them. I'm not.

[Well- look at that. After all that nitpicking Akechi conceded. Yeah, detective work was different- but whatever.]

That's the first reasonable thing you've said. [Snorting at that]
