Who: Aerith Gainsborough and YOU What: A general catchall log for the month! Where: Various locations within. When: Throughout the month. Content Warnings: n/a, will update if needed
Oh, come on. I don't want you breaking your neck trying to get it back to the way it was.
[ She gives him a playful shove, shaking her head. Cloud.......might actually try to do that, so she's going to have to stop him. ]
You think so? Well, I'll have one if you do. [ If they're poisoned, or something, then they'll both be in trouble... ] Want to sit and have a bite? I'm "buying!"
[ She nudges him toward one of the tables before retreating to the display, humming to herself as she fixes two plates with two particularly-scrumptious-looking desserts on them, along with napkins and utensils. ]
Whoever this belongs to, I'm a little jealous! [ Aerith plops down in the seat opposite Cloud, offering him one of the plates. ] But we'll have to judge whether or not they taste as good as they look, first.
An old temple to a forgotten god. That's actually... poetic.
[In a very dark sort of way. She was accustomed to the idea of a shrine or temple to some forgotten kami that people would venerate out of fear but not even remember what was enshrined there anymore. The forgotten kami of the world was sort of a 'thing' in Shinto practice at times.
She looked around and settled into one of the pews, resting an arm on it to look over at Aerith.]
[It's like a beautiful flower amongst all the darkness of this area~ it's the sort of thing Karamatsu would make crappy sappy poetry about! But it practically makes his heart leap to hear a pretty girl say his name in a cheerful tone!]
Wall Market.... [So it's like Aerith's home. This must be part of the poorer area. But it's incomplete?] I really couldn't tell with the insides of the buildings, they're so dark! Maybe there's some places here that are completing themselves...were you leaving?
If you wanted to check further, my schedule's open - if ya wouldn't mind the company?
[ The smile on her lips turns a little more amused at the comment about the church not being quite right. It certainly doesn't come as a surprise; Rinoa hasn't recognized any of her own twisted landmarks in this place, but she's heard time and time again from others that something's a little wrong with something that should be familiar to them. And, she supposes, a similar thing happened with the not-Moombas, in that seedy-looking cave market.
A bakery, though... Rinoa can't help but wonder if the food is any good. She hasn't eaten in... well, however long it's been that she's been here, now. Then again, she hasn't felt like she's needed to, and that makes no sense either.
Still, she's not about to unload all her thoughts and worries onto a girl she's only just met. Instead, she closes the gap between them, offering her hand along with her smile. ]
I'm Rinoa. I've been looking for flowers too. Not these ones, but... they're really pretty anyway!
[Tifa takes a look around once she's passed through the threshold, noting with a creased brow how similar the room is to hers and Clouds. Are all of them like this? The first walkthrough of his was confusing, but this just makes things weirder. The fact that all three of their sinks were filled with the strange green substance is off-putting—whoever is the original owner should be getting a talking-to about their cleanliness and hygiene.
She sets the bucket of supplies down and peers into the sink.]
Draining it was the easy part. Real smelly, though. It was scrubbing all that mold off the edges underneath that requires all the elbow grease.
[She slaps her elbow for no other reason than added emphasis.]
Wouldn't recommend touching it... No idea what that'll do to your bare hands if you do.
[She hasn't been courageous enough to find out, and wouldn't let Cloud do it, either.]
[ this place is an odd mix of peaceful and sweet, with the flowers and the... cakes... a little random, like most things here, but leo can't say he doesn't enjoy it.
he had been off to the side -- kicking his feet gently as he sat on one of the pews -- but aerith's appearance and words draw him out of his distraction.
without even moving from his position save for a slight lean forward to rest his arms on the other pew in front of him, he calls out (quieter than usual, because it doesn't seem right to use gremlin volume in a place that is, like, half calm): ]
Is the humming the big performance you were gonna show me? I'm still waiting!
[ he's kidding,
maybe. he'll offer her a wave whenever she turns to look at him, as he enjoys what little he can hear of the humming. ]
Maybe it wasn't made for anyone, you know? Maybe it was just a nice to go to feel safe.
[ The residents of Midgar's slums could certainly use a place like that. Maybe she should tell more people about the church...if she ever gets back there again. ]
Oh, just in general. It definitely doesn't keep bad guys away. [ There have been a number of fights within its walls. ] Nobody seems to respect the space! What a pain...
I'm still just looking around. This place gives me the creeps even when it's...the way it should be, but it definitely does now. [ It's not quite right, she thinks. And, since they still don't really know the extent of the dangers of the world, maybe it'd be better to stick together. ] I'd be happy if you came with me! Just keep an eye out.
[ In case of more of the weird monsters of this world. Or any shady figures who might've come through as part of the set dressing. ]
Usually it's really full of people, and there are all kinds of sounds, and smells. [ Aerith pulls a face, so he can probably guess what kind of smells they are. ] Not the friendliest city either, really. But it's good if you wanna let loose, you know?
Definitely not. I'd like to give them a try, but their owner isn't around. [ That might not stop her, though, as time goes on... The cakes look pretty delicious, after all. ] Hey, they'd go really well with your coffee! Maybe we can do a kind of swap?
I think maybe it became that? If what you say's true, but it definitely looks like something was worshiped here before. But that sort of place? It's not a terrible shelter in my experience. God's gotta have a decent house to put their stuf.
[She had a very ... shinto outlook about places of worship. The kami was actually housed inside.]
Heh. Anyone who calls themselves a bad guy doesn't respect much.
(Sweets are not his favorite thing in the world, so the temptation is not that present on him aside from wanting to eat something... Not that there's hunger, anyways.)
[He doesn't respond to being called sweet. Of course he'd be happy that she's happy, though he didn't personally do anything in this case, so he's not sure why she's saying something like that...]
[Regardless,]
I am...? Thank you.
[Knowing he's welcome here even though it's hers is nice. He moves further inside, to where he can get a better view of where the flowers are growing beneath the broken floorboards.]
It seems nice, here. I didn't know flowers could grow inside.
[She said they didn't mind the changes, either...]
Can you hear them?
[He's met others here who are spirits or unusual like him, and while signs point to all of them being devoid of their usual senses here, it can't hurt to check if it's the same for everyone.]
While it's at times mildly exasperating to have to take the time to go walk from place to place to see things in person, Merlin has definitely been trying to keep tabs on the various changes to the world. Which means that, sooner or later, once he notices the church he of course goes to investigate.
For the most part, it proves to be yet another odd mashup of at least two distinct buildings... But then one thing in particular catches his eye: the flowers. The first he's seen in this place, aside from the alien flora of that peculiar forest.
Needless to say, he's going to take a minute or two to sit and enjoy the sight, even if he's unable to use his powers to do anything with them.
[ He doesn't particularly want to sit down and eat; he wants to be useful, even if it means risking breaking his neck. All this sitting around and waiting for some kind of job is driving him bonkers, but maybe he should listen to her. Besides, she's already serving two plates, so no going back now! ]
Guess I could go for one...
[ He takes the plate that's offered and sets it down. He probes the dessert with his fork before deciding that it... looks safe. It passed the first stage of judging! Now for the actual tasting part... ]
One the count of three, yeah? One. Two. Three.
[ ...except he won't take a bite on three! Will she? ]
[ Aerith shakes Rinoa's hand, happy to find another bright and cheery presence when so many people default to...the opposite. ]
Nice to meet you, Rinoa. And thank you! I work really hard to keep them happy... [ She plants her hands on her hips, turning to peer down at the flower as if they were children being scolded by their mother. ] I hope you know that!
[ There's a pause, then a little giggle as she drops her hands and turns back to the other woman. ] You said you've been looking for flowers? I haven't seen any others since I got here, but...tell me about them anyway! Maybe I'll see 'em when the next batch of weird, new stuff appears.
Gross... [ She sighs, meandering over to Tifa's supply bucket and sourly pulling on the rubber gloves. ] Not a very nice place, huh?
[ What kind of apartment complex leaves all this junk in the rooms? Aerith huffs, extracting a sponge before moving over to the sink and wrinkling her nose at the sight. ]
All right, gunk. You're about to get tackled.
[ Definitely not going to let any of her skin come into contact with the sink goop, at Tifa's advisement. Instead, Aerith starts working, brow furrowed as she goes.
Her mind is elsewhere, though, and she peeks a little over her shoulder. ]
So, how's your day been? Make any new discoveries about this place?
[ Surprised, but not startled, Aerith straightens up and waves back when she spots Leo sitting nearby. ]
Hey! And...no, definitely not. To be honest, I don't think I'm cut out to be a big star... That life is just so grueling, you know?
[ Well, he might, but she sure doesn't. Her 'fame' isn't really fame at all, but she sure does hate the attention her heritage has brought her over the years. ]
You might be waiting a long time, if you're still gonna keep it up.
Mmm, yeah, I guess that's true. [ kind of? personal experience and all, though it's not really the fame and popularity part of it all that he considers dangerous. but, hmm, he thinks of it as a funny little comment on her end, and to it all he just smiles. ] Don't worry, I'm not gonna force you onto a stage if you don't wanna get on one! It's fun enough just watching people do everyday, regular things too, y'know? Liiike, tending to flowers!
[ performing and music is Life, therefore it's fun for him, but the little things people do -- small, tiny performances of their own -- are interesting enough for leo to enjoy. so terribly extra.
he gets up from his pew now, making his way over to aerith and crouching down to join her amidst the lilies. ]
Did these come from home? [ where was it again? midgard? oh, no, wrong midgard-- midgar? ] They're pretty!
[Tifa is already busy brushing away some of the dust on the desk, shifting and moving the blank pieces of paper to make room for her to work, and then putting it all back into place before, as if it had a place to begin with.
She peers up at Aerith just as she slides the chair back.]
Besides the green gunk in every room? Not really.
[New discoveries about this place, not quite. About herself? Well... It does make her curious.]
How about you? That church... how d'you feel about it showing up all of a sudden?
[She knows now that it's an important place to Aerith, just as Seventh Heaven meant a lot to Tifa and she can only pray that her friend is holding up better than she is.]
[ She can't help but laugh softly in response to the way the other woman talks to the flowers; it's the same way that she would talk to Angelo, she thinks, if her companion were having a particularly bratty day. With a smile, she sits down at the edge of the circle of flowers, not wanting to risk treading on any of them - they're too pretty for that. ]
There's a field, back where I'm from, that's full of flowers. White and yellow and pink... it's like the sun is always shining there, even when it's cloudy, you know? Anyway I... I don't know if anything from my home will turn up at all, but... I guess I'm looking for that place.
[ She lowers her head for a moment, if only to wipe away the tears that are suddenly sparkling on her lashes. She only just met this girl, she shouldn't start crying in front of her! It's just that thinking about that place...
Rinoa takes a deep breath, looking up again with a smile. ]
I made a promise there with my... with someone I care about. It's probably silly but... I keep thinking that if I can find it, I'll find him too.
Yeah, I getcha...it's kinda got that vibe about it. [It's definitely a little eerie. But everything's better together!!! He practically beams enough to light up an entire room when he's accepted to come along.] You got it~! I'm always super careful. [No he isn't.]
[He listens, half-grimacing at the 'smells' bit. P.U.!] I getcha. Sounds similar to the pleasure districts back home. Which were a lot less pleasant than they sounded and a lot more shady. 's why my bros and I usually kept away. Unless we all went to a bar, and even then, it usually was one of the less seedy ones.
Guess so. [ Aerith isn't one to really dwell on gods, particularly not since her main spiritual connection is just the literal Planet. ]
That's for sure. And then the good guys have to fight here, too, because the bad guys started it. [ sigh ] Round and round it goes... Maybe I should just put a lock on the old doors, huh? See if it stops 'em at all.
Like... [ She taps a finger on her chin, thinking, as the idea develops. ] You can give me some coffee to keep here to serve with the cakes, if people stop by, and I can give you some of these cakes to serve with coffee at the cafe! If the owner doesn't mind...
[ Or...? ]
Or... You can just take all the cakes for the cafe, but in exchange, you can help me get a flower shop going here! We'd have to hunt down whoever's memory this is, 'cause I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, but... What do you think?
They don't, usually. But they grow really well here. [ She shrugs, as if to say "not sure why." ] There's usually a few holes up there - [ and she points up to the roof, which is securely boarded up ] where the sun peeps through. That helps.
[ The question...makes her blink. It's not something someone's really asked her before in earnest, and something deeper than her usual levity seems to creep into her expression, even as her smile fades a little. ]
Back home, yeah. These aren't the same, though. [ Her smile twinges with a bit of sadness as she gazes down at the blooms. ] They're still beautiful, and alive, but I can't talk to them the same way.
[ The Planet isn't here, after all. She's cut off from the whispers she's heard her whole life. ]
