Ren trusts his feelings and intuitions enough to know this was not just a product of the moment. Akechi seems to forget that Ren could always poke holes in his perfect image, find the loopholes in the lies and see right through it. Terrible moment to be trying to compensate for that.
His own hands are balled into fists and he will not divert the gaze from the other - but at least Ren is able to keep calm and collected while his mind is running wild, so best of luck to Akechi in his investigating of Ren's features.
