A Novakid on a Mission
Who: Indigo and OPEN
What: Indigo tries to get chemistry to work so she can make concrete. Then she gets bored and messes around with the trash/furniture on Takoba Beach.
Where: Inside the caves of Mt. Silver, Mortis Lake, and Takoba Beach
When: Before the walkways in Mt. Silver show up; possibly backdated if necessary? Blame it on timey-wimey wibbly-wobbly if nothing else.
Content Warnings: Can't think of any, will add them as they come up.
1. Duck, duck, goose (Caves of Mt. Silver)
Indigo can be found wandering around the caves of Mt. Silver, with an open bottle of vinegar in one hand and the front half of a broken shovel (she found it in the Takoba trash) in the other. Every few steps, she tips the vinegar on its side, splashing a little on the rocks of the ground or wall. For a long time, this only results in creating a wet spot where she poured the vinegar, and Indigo looks at it with disappointment before continuing on.
After what feels like forever of this bizarre test, when Indigo pours some vinegar on a rock, it... hisses and bubbles. She lets out a joyful whoop that echoes throughout the cave even without the help of sound carrying farther than it should, and begins to go about prying it up with her shovel.
From then on, it's sporadic and random as to which rocks do nothing when the vinegar is poured, and which ones make bubbles. But when one makes bubbles, Indigo claims it; if it's small enough to pick up, she'll simply pick it up, otherwise she'll start hacking at it with the shovel if it looks delicate enough to separate from the surroundings. With some patience, she gets a good-sized pile of rocks this way, piled just outside the entrance to the cave she's in.
On her way back to unload some more rocks, Indigo spots a rock she tested earlier, still wet. She's not sure what compels her to try the test again, but she does, splashing more vinegar on the rock. It... hisses and bubbles, even though it didn't do anything when she tried it the first time; Indigo mentally scowls down at it.
"Now that don't make a lick o' sense."
2. Bonfire (Mortis Lake)
The construction Indigo has made at the edge of Mortis Lake isn't so much a kiln as it is a gigantic layer cake, with the rocks she's collected and firewood as the layers. But it's close enough as she lights it ablaze, simply sitting by while she waits for it to go out, making sure it doesn't spread to the nearby trees.
When the fire does go out, she takes a selection of rocks from the pile and places them in a nearby rusted wheelbarrow, graciously provided by, again, Takoba Beach. One by one she whacks them with her shovel; one, one rock crumbles when she hits it. But one is enough, one tells her that what she's trying is possible. She puts the other rocks back, lights the fire again, and goes to wait. Indigo is nothing if not tenacious, not easily giving up... but stars, this is boring.
3. A bored Novakid is a dangerous thing (Takoba Beach)
Novakid are not known for their ability to stick with boring tasks. So after a few rounds of the fire, she takes a break, wandering back down to Takoba Beach to see what she can find there.
The objects she pulls together, both furniture and trash, seem eclectic and random, and when she works, it looks like she's gone to her madness place. But when all is said and done, she has constructed... a wheelchair! Well, more like a wheel-recliner, as it has the ability to tilt the backrest down and the footrest up when it's in 'park'. It looks quite comfortable too, as she took the cushions from an unassembled couch. The only problem is... one wheel has four spokes, and the other has five. Indigo pulls them back off of her creation, looking down at them with displeasure; she pulled these out of the trash and carefully scrubbed the rust off, so it's not like beggars can be choosers, but it'll pull to one side and be a pain to steer like this.
Looking up, Indigo finds someone watching her; she has no idea how long they've been there, but she holds up the wheels.
"Ya think you can find me a partner to one o' these? It works better if they match."
4. Wildcard???
((Let me know if you want to do something else with Indigo! You're also free to run into her in the middle of any these prompts, rather than just the end.))

[The dream is a beanbag, but he doubts he's going to have much luck with that.]
Uh... does it have to be one of those?
[Is she particularly attached to those or is she just looking for a pair of wheels?]
no subject
"Guess not, as long as they match. They gotta be around the same size as these, though." She drops the wheels in the sand next to her creation, and begins searching the beach for more wheels herself.
no subject
He can tell it's a chair of some kind, but he's not sure if it has a specific purpose.
no subject
"I got bored, so I came down here to do somethin' more engaging. Ended up buildin' that, it was fun."
Indigo's not sure what she'll actually do with it now. Maybe there's someone around who can put it to better use.
no subject
He ducks behind a pile, pulling at something that he thinks might be a wheel - but then he tosses it aside when it turns out to be part of a barrel.

"I've made a few weapons in my time, but the stuff made by the pros seems to work better." She gestures at the weapons she's carrying; an old-fashioned scoped rifle carried on her back, and an iridescent sword at her waist. Of course, the rifle doesn't work just now, but she's not going to just leave it around somewhere so someone can steal it.
no subject
no subject
"Most of my tech ain't workin', either." Like her Matter Manipulator, her rifle... her sword doesn't have access to all of its abilities either, though luckily it still functions as a basic sword.
no subject
It looks a lot cooler than he's making it sound, and he makes a face as he realizes that.
"Yeah, I don't think anything really is so far."
no subject
"Odd, ain't it? I dunno what could be causin' somethin' like that." In regards to tech not working, she means.
no subject
"And yeah, it is. But, I mean... everything's odd." He's pretty sure he's said that at least a dozen times so far, but it doesn't make it any less true.
no subject
"You mean like the usual physical laws not workin' like they should an' such?" Surely he's not referring to the scenery itself? She's seen weirder, been to far weirder places.
1
"... What about it?" Genuinely curious, it just looks like a normal rock to him right now.
no subject
Indigo gestures at the bubbling rock, making an aggravated noise as her lack of face would otherwise hide her feelings.
"See the bubbles this rock is makin', 'cause I poured vinegar on it? I tried that before, and nothin' happened that time!"
Rocks that make bubbles when exposed to vinegar are what she's looking for, so she should be happy, but it's the lack of consistency that's got her confused and frustrated.
no subject
"I'd ask if you're sure it's the same rock, but I've been told that the laws of reality are unstable here. A simple experiment producing conflicting results... hmm, it's certainly a way to test that stability... but is it the chemical composition changing between attempts, or the laws of chemistry breaking down? What happens if we test it a third time? Could we produce a third type of reaction with enough attempts, or is it only the two that it can swap between...?"
He's starting to mumble a bit, but it is an interesting experiment.
no subject
"I ain't interested in all that metaphysical mumbo-jumbo. I'm just lookin' for calcium carbonate so I can make concrete."
no subject
"Concrete? The hell do you need concrete for?"
That is just... such a mundane reason to be testing rocks in a bizarre, alien dimension. Is concrete really the biggest of their concerns here??
no subject
Given all the different places she's visited, all the strange biomes she's seen, the only thing unusual about this world is the different physical rules. She's pretty 'alien' herself, compared to the other people here.

[ Aerith, who'd been walking along the beach to clear her mind, had spotted the fire from a distance and approached. Now, the young woman in the pink dress waves briefly, keeping her distance for now, but eager to help, if she can, or maybe to join this stranger around the inviting glow of the flames. ]
Did you just arrive, or have we somehow not met until now? [ She ask, smiling, arms linked behind her back. ]
no subject
"Naw, I don't need any help. I won't say no to an extra pair of hands, though. Or somebody to talk to, it's borin' work." If 'watching the fire to make sure it doesn't spread' can really be called 'work'.
At the stranger's question, she just shrugs.
"I've been here for a while."
no subject
[ And she'll settle in nearby, at the invitation to chat, settling with her knees drawn up and her arms wrapped around them. ]
This is actually kinda nice. [ She remarks, studying the flames and resting her chin on her knees. ] Like you could just sit here and forget all your worries...
[ Not that she has an enormous amount of them at the moment, stuck in this void-world as they are, but... ]
no subject
Indigo glances over at Aerith, face unable to express the concern she has about her body language. Is something bothering her?
"I guess ya like bonfires, huh?" She turns her face back toward the fire herself.
"I've taken care of my big worries back home... after that, the little stuff don't seem like much." Whatever she has to worry about now... can't really compare to all life in the universe being in danger.
no subject
[ She offers a little smile to Indigo, noting, but not staring at, the other's unique face. ]
Well, you're lucky, then! Wish I could say the same. [ She doubt she'll be free of her worries for a long time. ] Maybe I can try and be more like you while I'm here. To...not sweat the small stuff, and all that!
no subject
"Well, is it a worry ya can actually do somethin' about? I don't see the point in spendin' your energy on it if it ain't." There are further rules in her habits of deciding what deserves her concern and what doesn't, but that's a good one to start with.
no subject
At the question, though, her expression softens back into something more thoughtful. ]
Easier said than done sometimes, you know? [ And she's usually pretty good at it, but... ] I'm trying, anyway! Fortunately, there are a lot of good people here who can help make it a little less tough.
no subject
"Anyone you know?" In reference to the 'people here'. She hasn't been lucky herself on that front; the habitants of this place are almost completely human. Not that she doesn't have human friends, but they're not a plurality of her associates or anything.
no subject
[ She accepts the can with a smile, examining its label briefly before responding to the other's question. ]
There are! My friends Cloud and Tifa, from home. And my boyfriend, too. [ Still very much hard to believe. ] But I've also made a lot of new friends since I got here. Everyone has so many interesting stories to share, you know? All of our worlds are so different...
[ Or not really, in the case of Noctis, but he's the exception to the rule. ]
no subject
"I ain't met anyone I know yet. Is that common, are y'all showin' up in groups?" If that's the case, she feels a bit left out -- but then, growing up as a Novakid among humans, she's used to that. "So what's y'all's world like?"
no subject
[ It seems to be a pretty even split, anyway.
The question brings a little smile to her face, and she makes another thoughtful sound as she considers how to describe it. ]
Well, I don't know about our whole world - I haven't done much traveling - but I can tell you about Midgar. That's the city we came from. [ Funny that they'd just left the city, too, and walked right into this place. ] It's really, really big, and bright. Full of machines, and power plants... It has the top, which we call "the plate," and then the bottom, where the slums are. That's home sweet home! For me, it's Sector 5.
*shakes fist at notifs*
"Ya say 'home sweet home', but that don't sound like a nice place to live. Nobody oughtta hafta live in slums." She's aware of their existence, and has even come across them after leaving Earth. But she grew up in a post-scarcity utopia, with equal opportunity for all and everyone taken care of, and as far as she's concerned, slums belong nowhere but a history book, along with things like slavery and dying of preventable disease.
no problem!!
[ Okay, so not everyone in the slums has her cheery outlook, but Aerith's essentially made it her mission to impose that perspective onto everyone she meets. Apparently, it's at least a bit contagious. ]
Besides, then you really learn to appreciate the things and people that you have in your life. Know what I mean?
