[after his conversation with Ren, Damien just -- needs to be somewhere else, for awhile. so, while he's not usually one to come out this far, either, he's out wandering the Void, himself. he's brought a marker with him, intent on vandalizing the blank, white space to make himself feel better, when he came out this way, though he's not sure he has the heart for it, now. maybe he won't. maybe he will, just later. right now, though, he's just so fucking tired, albeit not physically, the light around him still bright enough]

[the honeymoon period is, once again, over. he and this place are fucking done, professionally. he -- ]

[ -- and then he hears the music, spots Cole, and for all that he wants to be left alone at the moment, he still finds himself drawn in that direction in spite of himself] You know, there's music in the books, too. [but maybe he needed to be alone, too. maybe he should just go. fuck this place]

[The rocking stops only briefly when Damien speaks, his head tilting slightly to acknowledge his presence without fully looking up. Damien is quiet inside again, or rather, he can't hear him or anyone else anymore. At least he's safe now.]

The books don't sing to you.

[a shame. he could probably stand to let Cole hear him, right now, even if he'd never do so willingly]

I wonder why not. What's so different about this, here?

I don't know.

[It's about as straightforward an answer as you can get. He doesn't know a lot of things about why the void does what it does, and right now he doesn't feel like theorizing about it. He just knows that these songs will sing to him, and that's what he wants. It's a soothing distraction, closer to how things should be.]

Nothing here sings so that I can hear it, but this does.

[he hums, not really in the mood to theorize, either. his curiosity, for what it was, was mostly token in the first place]

[a long moment of silence follows, then, that in mind, before:] I should have dragged a chair out here. [so he could sit and listen, too. he really hadn't thought that far ahead, though, blinded by his upset]

[Cole seems fine with listening to the humming without furthering the conversation. His head tilts once more when Damien goes on, though.]

Will sitting on the ground hurt your leg?

I honestly don't know.

[it's felt better, since waking -- probably since Yoshizawa tried to heal his leg in the dream. maybe. maybe it's all in his head and this is just a brief respite. who knows?]

[either way, though:] I do know that it'll make it damn near impossible to get up, though. [unless Cole can support his weight to help him up, and he's not sure he could, rail-thin as he is]

[Cole doesn't know either, so he can't help there. He can, however, help him get back up.]

If you want to sit, I'll help you stand up after.

[He may look like a rail, but he's far from weak. He wouldn't have been able to take down Damien's nightmares otherwise.]

[He hadn't come out here expecting company, but it's fine. He doesn't have to be alone to listen to the music.]

[he eyes Cole for a long moment, seemingly suspicious, then exhales a sigh before sitting. it's awkward for him to get down on the ground, just as much, if not moreso, than him getting up will probably be, but here he is. he's trusting you to help him up, later, Cole. don't ruin that trust]

[but at any rate, and after a very long time, Damien comments:] He's talented, that's for sure. [he noticed who the music was credited to, in the books, you see]

[Cole quietly watches him sit, and once he's sure he doesn't need help with the sitting process, goes back to looking at the ground.]

[He's glanced in enough books to know who wrote it, and Leo's the only composer he knows anyway.]

Leo likes composing... but it can be painful, too.

[At least, based on the memory of Leo's he experienced before the nightmare.]

I don't think it hurts now, but I don't know. He wasn't himself in the nightmare. Maybe I should try asking?

[He sounds uncertain, and really he's not even talking to Damien, not that he apparently cares that he's sitting right there listening.]

[not talking to him or otherwise, Damien's going to take it upon himself to answer. he does like hearing himself talk]

You'd probably get an answer faster, if you did, than if you waited around until you could do -- whatever it is you do again. [faster than waiting to be able to read minds again. also probably more conductive to furthering that relationship]

[Look, reading minds is way easier and faster??]

But I can't always know what hurts just by asking. The nightmare was hurting everyone, but I could hear it, I could find who needed me. I could do more to help.

[He's maybe just a little frustrated. Going back to "normal" just briefly means getting used to the new normal all over again.]

[But he's not important, the helping is important. So,]

Are you all right now? Aiden, is he someone who hurt you before?

[He wasn't there long enough to get much of a "deep" read on anyone. And everyone was preoccupied with more current problems on their minds.]

[he starts to respond to that -- and then, at the question, barks out a laugh, the sound almost incredulous and definitely humorless]

Oh, Aiden's absolutely hurt me before. [he pauses, then -- hesitates is more like it -- and then, at great lengths, admits:] We both have. [that's growth, right? admitting that he hurt Aiden, too? never mind the fact that all he did was kidnap his sister. Aiden fucking shot him in the head -- or will, as soon as he goes home]

[He thinks back to what tidbits he was able to hear and feel, when he found Damien running for his life.]

You're in danger, where you're from. He wants kill you, like in the nightmare. Why?

[If Damien is admitting he's hurt Aiden before too, then,]

Is it because you hurt him too?

Like I said. [he and Aiden are both so good at hurting each other] Never mind the fact that he's a fucking maniac. [you don't just shoot people!!]
