[either way, he stands there long enough, debating being somewhere else, that she finishes the piece and opens her eyes, and now he's trapped, isn't he? if he moves, for how limited his mobility is, he'll see him -- or at very least hear him. he has to stay, now]
[that in mind and after a beat (and a little stiltedly), he ventures:] I didn't know you played.
no subject
[It had been so longโit sure feels that wayโthat she wasn't sure she could anymore. Even as she sat down at the stool looking so sure of herself, she fought off the feelings of doubt as she heard the first notes play, sounding just like she remembered. Turns out that doubting herself was the wrong thing to do.
She didn't hear Damien come in, but the moment her eyes opened, he was the first thing she saw. Tifa would have called out to him even if he had turned around to leave, which is what she expected him to do... She can't tell how long it's been since they've spoken, so it's nice to see him.
Still, a twinge of sadness is pressed down beneath a smile.]
So? What's the verdict?
no subject
[maybe he just -- won't address it, until she does]
Better than I would have done. [he pauses, pushing away from where he's been leaning in the doorway to hobble over] In all seriousness, though, it was beautiful.
no subject
Thanks... Just some tune I remembered playing all the time, a long time ago.
[And played in her bar later, too. The name of the song escapes her, and she isn't even sure that one exists. (Because she's not allowed to know she has a theme song.)]
Don't tell me you know how to play, too!
no subject
[exhaling a heavy sigh as he settles down on the bench, and he -- isn't ready to address the distance between them, yet. he just hums, instead, that in mind, and keeps to small talk] I did, once upon a time. It's been almost thirty years, since my mother finally let me out of my lessons, though.
[now, he regrets not sticking with it. at the time, he hated taking piano lessons]
no subject
[She presses down on a key and a higher-pitched ring thrums from the center of the piano. She waits for it to finish before she goes on.]
They say the older you get, the harder it is to learn things like this. I don't believe that. [Not meant to discourage him, of course! Butโ] Not like we got much else to do around here though, right?
no subject
Not like we've got much else to do around here.
[a beat]
Though, I will say, this last little stretch has been something. [is he leading into them talking about him sort of avoiding her? maybe]
no subject
Yeah... a lot of things're changing lately.
[And so quickly, too. Ever since the dreamscape, Tifa's been much more conscious about the changes in the world, and with it, her relationships within it.]
You been keeping busy?
no subject
[he pauses -- hesitates a moment, really] Me and the little woman had our first real fight. [let's start there. with the fact that he and his girlfriend spent an hour screaming at each other in the hallway]
no subject
[Tifa's settles against the piano with a tilt of her head. Had she completely missed something, or...?]
Have I been spending too much time holed up in Wall Market? Feeling like I missed a memo.
no subject
It started as just flirting. Even I'm not sure when it became something more. [but it did] After that ... [he shrugs a little, the gesture caught between apologetic and helpless. he didn't really announce that he was seeing someone, and that's on him]
no subject
[She can't say she's ever pictured Damien as the kind of guy who'd go on dates or seek out a special lady friend down in the Void, but she's glad for him all the same.]
I'm really happy for you. [Although her eyes say something different.] ... How long's it been?
no subject
[but at any rate, he shakes his head. has he mentioned he really isn't sure how long it's been?] Since the shit in Mementos, at least. [that's when it started feeling real, maybe, when it started to matter. when he realized it wasn't just about the sex]
[god, he's turned into everything he taunted Aiden for being. he has a fucking girlfriend. he has people he just might care about. how did it come to this?]
[speaking of, though, he pauses for a moment (hesitates, really), and then at length, and seemingly at random, he starts:] Have you ever dreamt that someone you cared about hurt you, and when you woke up, you couldn't help but be suspicious of them?
no subject
It's an odd one and seems to come out of nowhere, but it feels important enough that Tifa gives him her full attention, if he didn't have it already. She wonders what prompted it, or if it's real or rhetorical, but only one way to find out, isn't there?
Swallowing past the growing lump in her throat, she gives him a shake of her head.]
Can't say I have.
[Although she has had some bad visions, but those are different. They aren't about anyone she particularly cares about hurting her.]
Did something happen to make you feel that way?
no subject
[well, there goes any possibility of explaining this easily, if she can't relate. sighing, he reaches up to thumb at his goatee, before bluntly (because why the fuck not, at this point?), he tells her:] When we were in that place, my personal little hell was that the people I cared about suddenly decided to try and kill me. Aiden featured fairly heavily in it.
[a beat]
So did you.
no subject
It's jarring to hear that, even in a dreamscape, she would have tried to hurt him. The thought has never once crossed her mindโharming him or anyone else is so far out of the realm of possibilitiesโso hearing that it happened at all is... upsetting would be an understatement.
Disturbing.]
Right... [is all she can say at first. But then the thought occurs to her:] That why I haven't seen you in what feels like forever?
no subject
I know it's ridiculous, all things considered, but. [but is it so far off from the truth? would she try and kill him, if she knew he was the bad guy in his story? never mind the fact that he hasn't done anything particularly evil here -- the truth, alone, might feel like a betrayal, so he can't risk it]
no subject
[Tifa's voice cracks, her heart breaking at his seeming inability to finish what he means to say. She thinks she knows the answer, but wants to hear it for herself, to be sure... so that she doesn't jump to any conclusions about what he might be thinking.
Even if she is afraid of what she'll hear.]
Tell me.
no subject
[probably succeeds, too, in the end. he's not naรฏve enough to think he doesn't end up dead]
no subject
I wish you wouldn't think that...
[It was a version of her, down in the tunnels, but...]
I saw it too. People I care about tried to hurt me... those things that looked like them. But I trust that the real ones would never...
[And she'd hoped not so deep down that Damien had grown to trust that she wouldn't, either. Had she been wrong about it?]
no subject
[Aiden isn't the first person he's cared about to hurt him. it's a constant in his life, whether or not it's intentional on their part, whether he has a hand in in, on his. it will continue to be, when Melinoรซ disappears not to long from now]
[either way, there's something sad and apologetic, both, on his face, when he glances over at her] Trite as it sounds, it's not you, it's me. [a beat] Not that I'm breaking up with you. [and another, a wry smile] For lack of better wording.
[he wants to move forward, here. he wants to -- try]
no subject
[She laughs, although it's a bit dry.
She'd be lying if she said it didn't hurt her knowing that someone she cares about had been worried that she might try to hurt them, but she can't say she faults him for it either. If Tifa didn't know any better, she might have thought the same thing about Cloud if they'd only just met and she had seen him down there.]
For the record, I never would. If that day ever does come, means you've done something pretty bad.
[Another joke, and she mirrors his wry smile with her own.]
no subject
[regardless, when the look fades finally and in entirety, he nods] I'll keep that in mind. [a pause follows, a moment of hesitation, really, and then he adds:] And for what it's worth, I'm sorry for the ... [the misunderstanding? hurting her? not being able to trust her like he wants to? something]
no subject
Just don't do it again.
[Avoiding her. Misunderstanding her like that. She likes to think she's the type of person who wouldn't lead anyone to think that way, so she has to wonder if she'd done something herself to make him worry. Her hands clasp together in front of her, grip tight and the leather of her gloves squeezing together as her knuckles turn white beneath them, but on the surface, she's still smiling.]
If you ever need someone to talk to... about that, or anything... you know where to find me, yeah?
[She'd rather they air their grievances than be left wondering.]
no subject
Scout's honor.
[can he swear like that, when he was never a boy scout to begin with? are there even boy scouts in her world? eh, whatever. the sentiment is the same. he won't avoid her again, for whatever reason]
Same goes for you. [if she ever needs an ear, he means]
