Damien wasn't planning on trying to hurt the Smeargles -- he's supposedly the villain, in his story, but he's not an idiot. He won't be kicking any puppies, metaphorically or otherwise, thanks.

Rather than tell Sam that, though, he just hums, before, "You've never seen a cat before?" Or, more importantly, his world doesn't have cats?

"I may have, but I'm not familiar with the word. There's no Pokemon that goes by the name of 'cat'." He has seen many Pokemon that look similar to cats, but that's not the word he uses for them. It's just a case of 'different words for the same thing'.

Damien frowns at him for a long moment, trying to decide how to explain cats without using the word in the definition. Too bad there's no internet here -- he'd just look up a cat meme. Too bad his phone doesn't have power, at the moment, out here, away from the rest of the known world and the power-bringing storms.

Finally, he decides on, "You've seen the critters some of the girls are keeping as pets, yes? Maybe small -- maybe seven pounds? -- with big ears and wings?" A beat. "I think there's a nest or two of them near Heavenly Blanc still, too."

He shrugs, before getting back on track. "The ears look like they belong on what we'd call a rabbit. The wings, a bird. The size and the fur and the retractable claws, though? That part's cat."

"Oh, yes, I'm familiar with them. They have the wings and face of a Pidgey." So those familiar traits are the ones he remembers.

"So cats are four-legged furry animals with claws?" That's perhaps a bit too broad of a description, but it's the idea he's getting from Damien. "There are a few Pokemon like that."

Broad, maybe, but not inaccurate, and so Damien nods. After a beat, and offhandedly, he adds, "We keep them as pets, where I'm from."

After another pause, he asks, "I'm assuming you're from the same world as that boy, though? Raihan?" He's mentioned Duraludon being a Pokemon and all, so it stands to reason, he thinks.

He gently shakes his head.

"I'm not sure, I don't think so. The other Pokemon trainers here... their world has Pokemon, but it's also slightly different than mine." The only big difference he knows about is his grandson, but if that's different, there must be other differences too.

That surprises him, though he knows it shouldn't. Humans feature in any number of the worlds he's heard about, so why not Pokemon? Still, his eyebrows raise, then lower in rapid succession, a sure sign of that surprise.

"Somehow, I was expecting you to all be from the same place," he explains after a beat and wryly.

"And I was pretty surprised that most of the people here aren't familiar with Pokemon. It's strange to think they're so rare." Pokemon are just part of the world for him, so it's odd that there are humans in more worlds than Pokemon, he thinks.

Damien hums in response to that, popping one shoulder in a shrug -- well, at least neither of them are alone, in their surprise. A pause follows, and then, backing up a little, he asks, "So, do you not have any other animals?"

If they don't have cats or rabbits or birds, it perhaps stands to reason.

"We have some wildlife that aren't Pokemon. Insects, small fish, things like that. But once you get into more intelligent or complex things, they're all Pokemon." He's seen things like earthworms and sardines before, but they're just there to fill out the bottom rungs of the food chain. They're not nearly as interesting as Pokemon, anyway.

"Interesting," Damien decides. A pause follows, a wry smile, and then he admits, "Not that I'm sure what to do with it." But the news, like he said, is interesting, if nothing else.
