Volleyball League Practice Catch-all

Who: primarily those who signed up to participate in the Void’s new volleyball league, but anyone and everyone is welcome!
What: volleyball practice for the new Void volleyball league
Where: the underground gymnasium

((ooc: this log is gonna be used for a few practice sessions, as well as a practice game and other such things! Iwaizumi will be sharing his knowledge with everyone and acting as a coach of sorts until the practice game, so feel free to use the TLs to interact with him, or make your own TLs under the sections to start your own threads with your teammates or others participating! also, if you are not a player but want to be in the audience or are playing another role, feel free to make TLs reflecting that! everyone is welcome (walk/ins included!) Why Iwaizumi, you're the one that started this discussion. [Not so gently pointing that out. He would have been content had the moron just kept his fat mouth shut from the start, too bad Iwaizumi was incapable of the simplest tasks.]

[It was difficult but he managed not to address the condition of his prior injury. Laugh while you can, it won't last forever. He was about to deliver some more disengenuous phrases when Ann inserted herself into the equation]

[A change swept over him, however minor. He resumed his usual level of disinterest]

I'm just full of surprises. [Said while still keeping his eyes trained on Iwa. As you'll find out]

My guess is that he doesn’t. [Said rather flatly, and with another pointed glare in his direction. He knows these two are close (maybe not just how close yet), so he won’t continue piling on insults unless Kaiba decides to keep antagonizing him (and he was antagonizing him, he swears!).]

Full of something alright. I was just leaving.

Yeah, you really are! I didn't know that you eve liked sports.

[ Wow, you two are worse actors than she is, jeez. Ann glances between the two, before she heaves a sigh and then glances off to the side. ]

Hey... are you two fighting again? [ Because it looks like they're fighting... or this is some build up to it, at least. Ah, but Iwa says he's leaving and she smiles at him again. ]

Oh! Are we meeting up later for more practice? Just because we won doesn't mean we should slack off, right?

[Her enthusiasm almost made him feel guilty. Almost. Still, Kaiba wasn't quite done making this uncomfortable for Iwaizumi]

I was thinking about joining one of the teams myself. [~~Not with any serious consideration, mind you~~ but this seemed like a good way to make volleyball-dork™ look worse] .. but Iwaizumi strongly suggested that I shouldn't bother. [Finally looking away from him to look at his much more attractive girlfriend instead]

Fighting? Ha, I wouldn't dream of it. [Not here, or now anyway] I've put all that behind me. [~~No, he really hasn't~~]

Right. [As in “right, I told you to fuck off,” and then a very sarcastic, “right, you wouldn’t dream of it.” God, why does she eat his shit up like this?

[He too turns his attention to Ann (which might mean her intervention here is actually working), and even smiles just a bit at the mention of more practice (only because he likes Ann and he likes her attitude, but if it got under Kaiba’s skin that she wanted to hang out with him, he wouldn’t mind).]

I’ll probably be back here in a few hours, or we could hit the beach. You kicked some serious ass out there, Ann. It’s paying off.

[That’s right. Focus on your friend, not her asshole boyfriend.]

Wait, you were? Really? [ Ann visibly brightens at Seto's words, before the excitement fades and she immediately looks crestfallen. ] W-wait, why?

[ Okay, she KNOWS why, but it doesn't stop her disappointment, at least. She quickly glances back at poor Iwa. ] But if he joined a team, wouldn't that make it so you two could maybe like, better get to know one another? Come to an understanding sort of thing, you know?

[ T e a m w o r k! Teamwork makes everyone stronger in the end! Sort of. ]

Thank you! [ She brightens again at the compliment, turning a little pink with embarrassment. ] I'll meet up with you wherever you want, today was really fun!

[Nothing she says really absolves him of guilt, but he keeps up the farce] I hadn't taken it off the table.. [out loud, just internally.] Something about.. how did you put it? [Glancing past her to Iwa briefly, then back again] Ah yes, my being a 'self-righteous asshole'. Even after I tried to smooth things over and everything. [Ann might have been able to see through this, but in this case nothing he said had been wholly inaccurate. He did, in theory, try to patch things up, and Iwa 100% called him an asshole]

[Kaiba felt confident that no matter what was said, he'd get the desired results. There was no risk of capitulation on this, it would just serve to make the other teen look like a jerk]

[The way she brightens up to the compliment, bothers him a bit.] You mean- you'll be meeting up with the team, right? [Just looking for clarification.]

[Iwaizumi bristles at each and every one of Kaiba’s words. It’s enraging that he’s trying to stick his nose into Iwa’s business and ruin his good time - some of the only activity that’s been able to bring him any peace in this place - but it’s even more infuriating that he’s trying to pull his bullshit wool over Ann’s eyes. If it weren’t for the fact that he trusts Ann’s perception enough to realize she probably knows Kaiba’s flaws better than anyone, he probably would say more about it - out of respect for her, he doesn’t.]

I told him if he wanted to play he could learn from someone else. [He says with his eyes on Kaiba. Eventually, he turns them back to Ann.] I know you like this guy, but I don’t, and I’m not trying to tangle myself up in more bullshit forcing something that can’t be forced.

[As for who will be practicing with who...] The rest of the team is heading home. I’ll be back here in an hour or two, so meet me then if you want to practice, okay?

[A simple invitation, and said without the same venom he’d been using when addressing Kaiba. He’s talking to Ann - his friend - right now, and so the tone is gentle, inviting. If Kaiba wants to take offense to that, let him (and if Iwa takes enjoyment in that offense, well, it can’t be helped).]

Mm? [ Ann blinks up at Seto, before glancing off to the side, because.... yeah. She can't see him trying to smooth things over period, and she knows that more than likely, he's instigated things here. It genuinely concerns her about what may happen in the future, but at least she doesn't have the chance to be disappointed for long as she starts connecting the dots one by one in her head. ] I mean... if... if you want to learn, Seto, I can teach you!

[ #nailedit? She smiles nervously up at both of them again, before turning beet red at Iwa's words. I k n o w y o u l i k e t h i s g u y... does he know? ] Wha-- [ focus!! ] oh. Oh! I mean... I just wish... that you two could get along and be friends...

[ Because it's better to be friends in a strange world like this than enemies, because one never knows when they'll need assistance. That's how she sees things, at least, even though she has a terrible feeling that Iwa and Seto are never going to be friends, period, no matter how much wishing she does. ]

Oh, yeah, I'll definitely be here! [ She brightens again, and then looks up at Seto again to confirm ~~his worst nightmare~~. ] Usually we practice one on one! It's a lot easier that way.

[Oh, Kaiba knew what he was doing, and it wasn't difficult to surmise that it was garnering the desired results. He just wanted to needle, Iwaizumi, just a bit in the most difficult to prove way possible. The thought of ruining the other guy's hobby would have just been an additional bonus. When Ann averted her gaze, he thought that maybe he had pushed it a little too far. Probably should have left off that whole 'trying to make amends' thing.] ... [He didn't say no to her offer, but he did pause a moment before adding the following:] They did include some volleyball in the curriculum at Domino High. [Unsure if he ever mentioned that school or not. Oh well] I won't be starting from scratch.

[As soon as that phrase left Iwa's lips, Kaiba instinctively directed his attention to Ann to see how she took it. Honestly, it was about what he expected, he nearly smiled but stopped himself keeping his expression controlled and more unreadable, as he looked back up. It took so little to fluster her, but he'd rather not let this jerk in on the true nature of their association.] Guess I know where I stand. [In response to Iwa's professed dislike. Kaiba didn't sound like he cared, he was just amused]

[Ann had her work cut out for her if she still held on to some hope that these two hardheads could ever become friends]

Definitely? [Crinkling his nose at that not even trying to conceal it this time.] Just how many sessions have you attended? [Looking to her for answers because, he was so done listening to Iwa]

[Iwaizumi raises a brow at Ann’s reaction, wondering immediately why blushing and flustering would be her response to such a simple statement.

[Gross. If he didn’t know she had a crush on him before, he definitely does now.

[As for Kaiba’s little interrogation...]

What are you, her dad? She can do whatever she wants. [He only refrains from adding “asshole” to the end of his statement to keep from upsetting Ann more.]

[ Listen. Blushing and getting flustered is her general reaction to most things of an embarrassing nature, and she's tried so hard to keep her feelings for Seto under wraps and she is trying so hard to keep their newly blossomed relationship a secret that the thought of poor Iwaizumi figuring it out is breaking her brain a little bit.

She can do nothing but stare wide eyed and bright red in the face for a few moments. At least, until Seto speaks again. ]

How many-- er, I dunno. I didn't bother keeping track. [ Is this something she's supposed to think of now? Realization of how it probably sounds is hitting her, but before she has the opportunity to turn even more red, Iwa speaks up again. She laughs, though it's more nervous than humorous, and she looks back up at him, waving her hands. ] No, no! It's fine! Seto knows that, it's fine! Really!

[ what is happening right now why is this her life-- ]

[With an exaggerated huff, he addressed Iwaizumi, unable to let that remark slide] You have a nasty habit of butting in when you're not being addressed. Can't you shut your mouth for even a few minutes? [So much for trying to be mask his dislike] No one asked you. [Maybe this situation shouldn't have bothered him as much as it did, but Ann was fraternizing with the enemy and had been for how long? How could she stand the sight of this loud mouthed oaf. It likely also didn't help that both himself and Ann had engaged in their own semi regular exercise. It was like Iwa was intruding into his territory...]

[Humming to Ann's initial response, he kept his eyes fixed on the offending party, trying to read his body language. Iwa had better not have an ulterior motive encapsulated in all this one on one time.]

What she does, is her business but there's nothing to stop me from questioning it.. especially when it involves wasting her time with a loser like you. [Losing the passive from his earlier passive aggressive dialogue]

[It remains a good thing that Ann is standing between them, because Iwaizumi’s foot is practically twitching to mail Kaiba between his legs again.]

Then why ask? Maybe you should be the one minding your business, Gamer Boy. Since when do you get any say in who people spend their time with, huh?

[ This is getting out of hand real fast, and Ann glances over her shoulder. Ren's standing over there, she can see him, and she knows he's watching; which might be a good thing, if she needs help prying these two off of one another assuming that she cannot, in fact, disengage this proverbial ticking time bomb. ]

Hey, come on... let's not do this today. Iwaizumi isn't a loser and hanging out with him is definitely not a waste of time. We have a good time together...

[ Oh god, why is this happening right now? She tries to smile at the two young men, waving her hands around a little. ]

Let's just try to get along, okay? Please?

[If she weren't in the way, then Iwa would be getting a taste of what Kaiba was capable of after a month of his exercise regimen. Plus, he had the added benefit of not having just awoken from a coma this time]

.. Because I wanted to know. Why else? Why do you have to question everything I do or say? [Somehow managing to refrain from saying this is my business. Then he shot Ann an incredulous look]

I don't believe this... this lamebrain assaults me, and now you're hanging out with him all the time. [He somehow doubted such would be the case if the altercation had never occurred, and he also didn't think she'd appreciate it if he started palling around with any of her enemies. Let me just go out for drinks with Kamoshida. The offense wasn't on the same scale, and there was no risk of Kaiba actually socializing with that degenerate sex offender. He'd sooner put Kamoshida in an early grave himself.. but still! It was the principle of the thing.]

I already did- I'm done playing that game. [Expelling a huff like a petulant child]

Right. A game. One no one believed for a goddamn second, you—-

[Iwaizumi takes a deep breath, his fists clenching at his sides. He turns to Ann, trying to keep his expression as even as possible.]

Listen, Ann. I’m not trying to fight with your...friend here. I’m going to go, and I’ll see you later, okay?

[He shoots one final glare in Kaiba’s direction, then looks back to his friend one more time.] I hope nothing holds you up.

[His final glance at Ann is somewhat apologetic, but there are no words to accompany it. He adjusts his gym bag on his shoulder and turns to make his exit.]

Seto, please?

[ She's getting really exasperated here, and... oh. The spotlight is on her right now, and her eyes widen. ]

I don't hang out with him all the time! I spend almost all of my time with you, when you're not busy. [ Well, and Ren and the others, but, details. ] Come on, don't be like that...

[ It's a damn good thing Seto keeps that little thought of his to himself, feelings of negativity towards the former coach or not. She glances back at Iwa, her shoulders dropping slightly. ]

It's okay... nothing is going to hold me up, I'll be here. See you after a while!

[ You know. Once she... gets done.... here. With Seto. ]

--you, what? Afraid to speak candidly with an audience? Pathetic.

[He certainly wasn't feeling equally obligated to censor himself, no matter how favorable Ann thought of them both. Her plea went unheeded, as he gave a few parting verbal barbs for Iwa.]

Like hell you weren't. [Sneering at that falsehood] You were trying to stir something up from the start or you wouldn't have addressed me in the first place. [The glare was met with one of Kaiba's own.] Finally. Go.

[At least now he could talk one on one with her, without the peanut gallery butting in] ...!!! [When she added that bit about spending most of her time with him, he found himself rendered speechless, and realized how clingy this conversation was making him sound.] I can't begin to understand the appeal of this business with Iwaizumi.

[Iwaizumi can’t help himself. Though he doesn’t turn to face either of them, as he’s leaving, he sticks a middle finger up behind him at Kaiba’s parting words. See you later, fuck face.]

Seto! Come on, stop...

[ Ugh. She winces at that middle finger, before she sighs heavily and turns back to Seto, placing her hands on her hips. ]

Just... relax. We're friends now -- don't you remember what I told you a while back? [ Sometimes you catch more flies with honey, dude. Having enemies in a place like this is generally not a good idea... everyone needs to try and coincide in peace, etc etc. She knows they've had this conversation, Seto. At least once. Once she's sure that the coast is clear, she gently wraps an arm around one of Seto's. ]

Come on, let's go for a walk and cool down, okay?

I'm just setting the record straight. [Takamaki- though this isn't fully a last name moment so he leaves it off]

[That juvenile lowlife is just lucky there isn't a loose volleyball around, or he would return the favor from the apartments with a cheap shot of his own.]

Vaguely. [Was he supposed to take it to heart and keep it on a post-it note? FYI, he didn't do either. Maybe he remembered it more clearly than he indicated but he wasn't a catch them with honey kind of person, especially not with someone who so clearly didn't deserve it. He looked puzzled as he felt her grip onto his arm, it was the only thing that got him to look away from the retreating form of his enemy..]

I don't need to cool down. [Yes, you do] I need … [Trailing off sharply he didn't complete the thought. I need Iwa's head on a platter- or a spear driven into the ground outside of the gym.... Gruesome and colorful though that was, he relented marginally, and allowed her to pull him aside if only to avoid explanation.]

[ Ann just stares up at him tiredly, suddenly realizing that she really needs to make more female friends around here to offset the ridiculous amounts of testosterone she's constantly surrounded by, jeez... ]

Mm... [ Of course he wouldn't pay attention to that. Or... care about it in general. It doesn't really matter right now anyways, because for now, the coast is clear and the altercation has been temporarily suspended. She just needs go figure out a way to keep it that way, because she knows that there will come a time where she won't be able to intervene and shit is going to hit the fan. Again. She doesn't want either one of them to get hurt. At least he's being reasonable right now, even letting her gently tug him. ]

I think you do... just a little. [ She starts to walk down the beach and away from the crowd of people who were still hanging behind, chatting and messing around, and once they're further away she releases his arm to lightly take hold of his hand instead, loosely linking their fingers together so that if he feels so inclined he can easily pull away.

There is at least one subject she knows that will get his attention and maybe get him to cool his jets just a little. ] When are you going to teach me how to play Duel Monsters, hm?

[ Because they've talked about this before, and besides... it's only fair. If she's going to hang out with Iwaizumi and learn how to play volleyball, she needs to start learning how to do the things Seto loves, too. And she genuinely wants to. ]
