(mugetsu does the erasing, jumping on the sand and messing up the design, which grants a weak laugh from the man.)

Change. (kimihiro smiles, standing up to find them a place to sit that wouldn't upset damien's leg.) It was my mentor's symbol, too. I guess in hindsight, it meant that I had changed because of her.

[he's silent for a moment, digesting that, and then:] Too bad it's not working, right now. I'm curious as to what mine would be. [because he would absolutely have something, no matter what Kimihiro tells him next, thank you, and it'd probably be a weasel or a magpie, if the narration had to pick. both suit]

It is what you choose it to be. Yuuko-san was a bringer of change, she fulfilled people's wishes and so, they could change their life or outcomes. Mine is a bird because I got the idea from someone close to me.

(a caged bird is a bird nonetheless.)

[not that he could say how it's disappointing that it's a choice, not something that the universe chooses for you, but it is. it feels like a cheat, somehow]

In a way, it too is hitsuzen, Damien. If Syaoran didn't come to visit me, I wouldn't have my own signature for protection. Isn't that too, universally commended?

(kimihiro notes. for a japanese person, the concept is much more apparent, but of course, damien doesn't fit the demographic.)

In Japanese, we have two words that describe events. 'Guzen', or coincidence, and 'hitsuzen', which could be considered fate. In Guzen, all events are meaningless, in the sense that events signify nothing beyond themselves; hitsuzen being the complete opposite.

(a beat later,)

Yuuko-san told me from the get-go that everything is hitsuzen. Us being here? Serves a purpose. My being right here, with you, serves a purpose. People meet people when they're supposed to meet, and people part when their fates are no longer interconnected.
