002 - Growing Pains

OOC ▲ Comments
Light seems to have been especially tricky for the world to comprehend, but it finally, finally seems to have figured things out. Light comes from more than just the sky, and now signs and lamps that were once dark have begun to glow brightly. From the Wall Market's dazzling exhibition of color to the dimmed street lamps of the City of Tears, the whole world has been made bright and lively once more without losing the comfort and tranquility that darkness brings. Even the broken screens of the Hammerlocke Stadium give off a pleasant glow, and the world doesn't seem to care that some lights need electricity to stay on - lights are simply lights, as far as the world seems concerned.
Unfortunately, these new lights are a little too simple. Without any need for a power source, there's no way to turn the lights off - if something is deemed a light source, it will always function as a light source. The only way to stop it is to destroy the object beyond recognition, but that might not be the most practical solution. Covering up the lights is the next best thing, but it's a task that's easier with some sources than others. At least no one needs to sleep yet.
Difficulties aside, now seems like the perfect time to start exploring all those new corners of the world that were previously too dark to navigate. Fire is an easy, safe and portable light source that anyone can use, and it even puts itself out after awhile. Just be careful not to get stuck in the dark by a stray breeze.
Who's Hungry?
Animals need to eat. People need to eat. These are simple facts that people lost in the strange, changing landscape all seem to be well aware of, yet appear to not apply to this world. That is not to say that people can’t eat or drink, for many people do, but there is no actual need. Eating provides nothing but the knowledge that one has eaten, and anyone might go without food entirely. Lately, some might have found eating has become more satisfying and fulfilling an act, as though food is providing them with a vaguely-defined something they didn’t get before. It doesn’t seem to mean much in the grand scheme of things, but perhaps it allows them some sense of normality.
When hunger sets in, it’s sudden. Every person, whether or not they ever needed to eat in their homeland, is hit with a powerful, overwhelming sense of hunger, to the point it feels that if they do not eat they will soon starve. Those who have never eaten in all their time here might easily find themselves so hungry they can barely even move, and have little choice but to eat. Fortunately, food is plentiful. If it can be put in the mouth, chewed and swallowed, it is food, and thus will give a person temporary relief from their hunger. What goes in does not appear to come out, instead simply becoming part of that person and revitalizing them. How long it takes to feel hungry again seems entirely random, and each time there is no lead up - someone is either fine, or they are starving, without any in-between.
Starving Mad Beasts
When people suddenly remember hunger, so too do the animals of the world. For some creatures this isn't an issue - the tall-necked beasts continue to graze on the treetops like they always have, and the smaller creatures seem content with snacking on whatever small scraps they can find. Not all creatures are so easily satisfied, however, and the more aggressive ones have turned to attacking other species for food.
The vicious water dragons are quick to clamp their mouths on anything within reach... but, lacking teeth, this doesn't amount to much. Still, they're as persistent as ever, and in a way their inability to viciously devour their prey only makes them more dangerous. These beasts are starving, and for all their skill in chasing down prey they can do little to actually eat their catch, which means they're constantly on the hunt and out to get anything that moves. Perhaps it might even be a good idea to help them out, if feeding the fish might make them a little less aggressive.
The machines are far better equipped for hunting, and all the more dangerous now that they're hungry enough to take a bite out of someone. Death is not a concept the world understands, so it's not like they're doing any permanent harm, but it's still a bit unnerving to see animals limping by with bite-sized chunks taken out of them. They haven't had a taste of people yet, but it doesn't seem like it'll be long before they try.
Mushroom Hunting
Mushrooms are a new sight within the world, and a perfect snack to satisfy that sudden debilitating hunger! Harvesting them can be a bit of a problem, however. For one, they are massive, and the task of cutting one down and breaking it into edible chunks is made much easier with a group of people than one person working alone. Finding the mushrooms in their dark habitats may also be difficult... although, it is much easier to spot a mushroom the size of an entire person compared to something much smaller.
The real problem with mushroom hunting is where they can grow, which is nearly anywhere indoors. Though light now comes from other sources besides the sky, there are still buildings with dark corners that might suddenly acquire a giant mushroom or two (or three, or four) if left alone. And if those mushrooms are allowed to remain, they may just continue to grow, and grow, and grow...
So, if you don't want giant mushrooms bursting through your roof, it might be a good idea to keep an eye out for them before that happens.

Blue Oak | Pokémon Sun/Moon | OTA!
[Ever since hunger hit quite suddenly, food sourcing has become a hot topic, and with some good points made about the limited ready-made food supply, Blue's been on a mission to figure out what they could gather to eat in this place that didn't involve the limited groceries that had appeared here- or killing the native Pokémon.]
[It was certainly very strange to see the sudden, bright and colorful mushrooms that had begun to grow in clusters around the dark, damp caverns of Mt. Silver, but not unwelcome. After some consultation with Eevee and some taste testing, they'd determined the mushrooms were in fact edible, and decently tasty! Blue thought they could certainly manage to cook some good dishes with them, so he can be found using the light of his Pokégear or a makeshift lantern, working with Eevee to shave slices off the stalks and caps of the mushrooms with a dinner knife borrowed from Heavenly Blanc. Feel free to join in, especially if you need a quick snack!]
Cooks In The Kitchen @ Heavenly Blanc
[You might not have guessed it just from casually meeting Blue, but he was actually quite adept at cooking- one had to be, when you went off to live on your own, camping mostly, at 11 years old. On top of that, he had a whole team of hungry mouths to feed, typically... And it seems that won't be changing anytime soon, considering everyone around here is starving now.]
[Upon entering Heavenly Blanc, though, your nose might be hit by an unbelievably spicy smell- perhaps.... too spicy, depending on your tastes- just what the heck is Blue cooking back there, borrowing the kitchen at the back of the café!?]
Bonjour~! You here to grab food? This pot's almost done, so sit tight and I'll make you a bowl, since I'm such a nice guy!
Fish Are Friends, And Also Need Food (dual prompt w/
[The people aren't the only ones suffering the sudden hunger pains- the Magikarp had grown even more violent since the world changed, and Blue and Lance have grown very concerned for their cantankerous fish friends. As Gyarados trainers both, they had a bit of a soft spot for the otherwise useless, pathetic excuses for 'dragons'....]
[So if you happen to be strolling by Mortis Lake (searching for food yourself, perhaps), expect to come upon the scene of Blue and Lance attempting to wrangle several floppy and angry fish, futilely gumming on their fingers as they attempt to feed them slivers of harvested mushrooms, instead.]
fish!!!!!!
these things, however, are somehow even dumber. ]
I have never met a Magikarp so determined to starve to death.
[ it's remarkable, really, as lance tries to, you know, shove a piece of mushroom into one of the magikarp's mouths, unbothered by the attempts to remove his fingers. ]
You would think they've never eaten before, by how hungry they are.
[ dragonite is hanging out behind them, casually munching on mushrooms that are supposed to be for the magikarp, but after the whole "dragonite fainting" incident, lance isn't going to dare tell him not to eat anything ever again, thank you. ]
no subject
[It's with this potential experiment in mind that he approaches the lake with a bag full of mushroom chunks, only to find he's been beaten to the punch. Which isn't a bad thing, though he is a little surprised. He wasn't sure anyone else would want to feed the angry fish, what with how aggressive they can be.]
[He approaches them, unbothered by the sight of two men trying to force feed giant clawed fish. He recognizes Blue, but he hasn't personally met the other person, or what he assumes must be another Pokemon.]
Is that what they're called? Magikarp?
no subject
[Blue's response is worry, and increasing squeamishness as the poor things struggle against his hands. Their little claws are digging into his hands uselessly as he tries to gingerly urge a thin slice of mushroom into the fishy gullet of one of the, only for it to flop and struggle in his hands, letting the slices fall from his hands.] Ah, sheesh....
[Blue is trying to handle picking it up again and still keep hold of the fish when he hears Cole's voice, and his head lifts in surprise.] --Oh, Cole! Did you come to try and help them, too? [Blue smiles brightly, in lieu of waving, since his hands are busy.] Yeah, they're a Pokémon, called Magikarp. We could probably use the extra help, if you wanna lend a hand...

[ and lance is about to continue when a newcomer arrives, someone that blue seems to be familiar with —- and lance looks up with a curious look, pausing in his thought. cole, hm? ]
Hello, Cole.
[ warmly enough! ]
Help would be appreciated; my name is Lance. It’s nice to meet you.

Mushroom Gathering
Namely, one of the little Pidgey creatures that calls Mt. Silver its home comes padding his way over from a distance, first visible by his eyes flashing in the darkness, then by the sound of his beak clicking softly once he gets to Blue's feet, tilting his head in a way that's decidedly bird-like. He's very clearly vying for a piece of one of those mushrooms...
Before Blue can get a chance to share, though, a voice can be heard from beyond the darkness calling out to the Pidgey who is...blatantly ignoring him in favor of vying for a snack.]
Hey! Come on, you can't keep running off into the darkness, I don't want to lose you... [A sigh, before Izuku relents and calls the little guy's name reluctantly, one he did not agree to-] Murderlord!!
[Only THEN does the creature chirp and turn his head, but he's like...still not moving, he's hungry okay.]
no subject
[Blue, immediately charmed by the familiar little guy, stoops down to give him some soothing little thumb-rubs over the feathers cresting the top of his head. As a longtime Pidgey-line trainer, he had a soft spot for the strange little creatures, even if they were pretty different from the Pidgey he was used to...]
[By the time Izuku catches up, Blue is tugging a little sliver of dried mushroom out from his pack and offering it out to the Pidgey, who is snapping it up when they both glance up to the boy.]
[Ah...] Oh.... It's you! The Zapdos kid. [Blue gives a friendly wave, then glances between the critter and the boy.] Heh, you're quite the Birdkeeper, aren't you?
no subject
He leans over, hands on his knees as he finally catches up with the little guy, pausing long enough to catch his breath.]
Oh, me? I mean...I g-guess so!
[Wheeze]
How...haah...how have you guys been?
no subject
Oh yeah? Not bad, ourselves! Was wondering if you made it outta that weird empty snow...
[He glances down to the Pidgey, then back to Izuku, pointing towards him.] But I guess you seem to do pretty well for yourself, huh. This guy decided to go along with you?

Cooks in the Kitchen
"Well, if you're offerin', I ain't gonna turn ya down. But I can't get at my pixels just now, is that a problem?" Because this is clearly some kind of restaurant where you pay for your food, right? Perhaps they can work out some kind of barter.
no subject
"Your huh?" Blue has no idea she means money, but since he's ladling out some of that fresh curry onto a bowl of rice for her anyway, and pushing it across the counter to her, it doesn't seem like it's going to be a problem.
"Careful, now- when I tell you I make it hot, I'm not kidding around! Give it a little taste-test, first."
no subject
If she had a face, she'd be raising an eyebrow at his words of caution. Novakid pop chilis like popcorn, okay, she'll be fine.
"It ain't like I got a tongue to burn off," she remarks, bringing up a spoonful to where her lips would be... and then the food just disappears off the spoon. She sets it down again, showing no reaction to any heat.
no subject
Boy, she doesn't seem to, does she? Blue is going to caution gently once more as she brings to spoon to her face, but.... Huh? Huh??
Blue gawks at her, then stares down at her spoon as it sets down empty, and back up again. Did he blink?
"....I guess you like real spicy food like me, though, huh?" He chuckles, trying to figure out how to ask how she even ate it. "But I guess you must be red-hot to be giving off a glow like that!"

let's try blue's food!
Ren takes a peek at the pot before he sits down, a smile curving the corners of his lips.)
Alright. (He agrees, a hand on his jaw with the respective elbow on the counter.)
Where’s Eevee?
I can't believe Ren is about to die
[He'd told him as much, and so when Ren shows up just in time for Blue's curry to be ready, he cheerfully waves him over with his spoon.]
Heheh, you sure you can handle this? It's nothin' like your curry, I'll warn you right now!
[The fuzzy little bastard in question toddles out from behind the counter towards Ren, licking his chops, dotted with the red-chili flavored oil of the curry. He's already started on his share!] Vuu?
he had a good run
Hahaha... It can't, right? Right?
Either way, Ren is not one to back down from a challenge in stupid protagonist manner, so he just nods in turn. Surely he'll try.
Not long after that, his gaze falls to the source of the cute 'Vuu' and he perks up immediately, giving him a full smile and a wave before gesturing with his head. Enjoy your meal first!)
Can't wait.
(It's what he says to Blue, attentive eyes trying to see what he put in there in antecipation... Just for science.)
no subject
[That's what Blue figures, anyway. He spoons a generous portion into a bowl of rice for Ren, and slides it across the counter. Since he's nice, he'll even pour him some water-]
[He's gonna need it.]
There ya go! Take it easy on the first bite- you know, just so you can test it... I can always add some extra seasoning if you want more.
[From the looks of the curry, and the flecks and drenched color of red of the sauce, there was a lot of chili oil in this, sriracha, different spices like cumin and turmeric.... And mixed into it, to give it the nice thick texture and some body to bite into was some potatoes and carrots from the bar's pantry.]
[With the bowl pushed under his nose, the spice is even more intense- and the steam probably fogs his glasses a little. Good luck, Ren.]

Cook's In the Kitchen
...Guess I'll take you up on that, spiky.
no subject
Sure thing, kid. [This one has sass, huh? Blue remembers being that brat.] Just don't blame me if it makes you cry!
[He scoops a fresh heaping of rice into a shallow bowl and ladles the curry over it, with plenty of the newly spawned mushrooms stewed up into it. The smell as the bowl is pushed towards him is powerful enough to make the senses water just by the steam alone. Blue grabs a glass to fill with water, too, as an afterthought.]
no subject
[ He's a teenager! There's a difference!
But he does pull the bowl towards him, not tearing up at all as he grabs whatever utensils are available here. ]
And I can handle any level of spice you can make.
no subject
[What a classic line! He's right, Blue supposes; what matters isn't age, but talent! ...Not that most other people around here were trainers, but...]
[Blue is pretty impressed that he doesn't flinch at all in the face of the curry; he sets the glass of water beside his bowl, and hums thoughtfully.]
Hey, if you enjoy this kind of thing too, all the power to you! For me, this is the only way to eat curry. [He spoons out another bowl of the curry with just a little bit of rice; this bowl goes to the furry fella waiting impatiently at his feet, who leaps up a little ways down the counter from Katsuki to wag his bushy tail and dig in.] My Pokémon like it spicy, too.

Mushroom Gathering!
When he gets close enough, he squints to make out what they're eating. ]
Those are edible, then. Good.

[That's what you've been pegged as now, Yzak, you can't argue it. Because Blue has met other aliens now, which means it's totally a correct and realistic assumption!]
You must not have eaten Earth food before, [Blue nods sagely, and offers Yzak out a piece of a mushroom cap.] So here's a free sample. They're great for stewing or drying out!
no subject
I'm not 'alien guy'! It's Yzak, you smartass!
And I've eaten plenty of mushrooms! [ So he does not!! Take!! The offered mushroom!! ] I eat the same things you eat on Earth!
no subject
Well fine, if you don't want free food! That's kinda lame, though. What's the point in being from space if you don't even get to eat cool, weird alien stuff?
[He scoffs, slicing another mushroom cap; this one goes to Eevee, the spoiled little brat scarfing them down.] There's not even like, space mushrooms....? Big, glowy green ones! Maybe they've got spores that take control of people's minds, too.
[He's just seen way too many movies.]
