Did mindfulness exercises work for ROMs in the same way they worked for humans? Turing still wasn't sure how much of human psychology applied to them, but that was beside the point.
The actual point was that their feelings were all tangled up after what had happened, and their painting was starting to reflect that. The aged tree trunk had taken on dark blues and purples instead of their usual pastels, and it leaned as if it was about to topple over with a strong enough wind. The branches it supported were doing no better and swirled around each other, with some tied into literal knots that would stubbornly resist any attempts to untie them.
...This was not exactly a cry for help, but they also weren't done yet. ]
