With that hard exterior he's tried so hard to put on around her, he's the last person she expected to see down here, listening to her play, so the surprise in her expression is there, eyes widening behind the happy glow.]
Hm? [She calls out to him, standing up and pressing her palms on the lid of the piano. So, what'd you think?] Eight out of ten?
[She's just being modest!]
no subject
Pushing off the door frame, he corrected his posture as if having been caught relaxing was unacceptable.]
[As a greeting he waved his right hand through the air once.] You're asking me? [I mean it was probably universally accepted that Seto Kaiba was a harsh critic. Still, he didn't have anything negative to say at this moment] When you're performing you get absorbed by it, connecting to the instrument and moving fluidly in tandem with it.
[Then with a shrug, and a hint of a lighthearted smile.] It's at least over a 5. [Above average.
Please don't hit him, he's clearly kidding]no subject
[It's better than what she was expecting, to be honest, and the above average score is eased by the smile he displaysโa first for her, she thinks. She'll make a friend of you yet, Kaiba!
Besides, after all those years of never having touched a piano, and never even being able to find one in Sector Seven, she thinks it's a fair score. Maybe she wasn't being so modest after all.
Straightening, she brushes her hand on her skirt, and then gestures to the piano.]
You play at all?
no subject
Don't go making those friendship bracelets yet! This time he couldn't really help it, he appreciated talent in it's various forms. It would be lying not to acknowledge her abilities to some degree. He honestly couldn't have guessed that the duration had been that long between sessions. Perhaps there was enough lingering muscle memory to cover for the elapsed time, or let's face it- he was not a conductor or musician himself so when she poses her question it just hits him as laughable.]
Music was never a part of my curriculum. [Strict though it had been, apparently his adopted father didn't see the value in such dalliances. If it didn't have something to do with business, strategy, or being able to communicate internationally it wasn't necessary.]
I hire people for that. [Whenever a game that was in development required a soundtrack of course. He could at least tell from listening what was working and what wasn't without formal training.] How long did it take you to pick it up?
no subject
[And even then, she's still far from perfect, even now. There are so many out there more talented than her, but it was never about being the best at it. She likes how it sounds, and how it feels to play a song the whole way through, and the way it feels to listen to someone else do it, too.
The thought alone brings a sort of whimsical note to her voice.]
I like to think I was disciplined growing up... takes a lot of practice and mistakes. Good thing I'm so stubborn, huh?
[She pats the seat next to her, the smile widening further with a touch of mischief.]
no subject
[Accepting that answer with a slight nod. Some people were naturally inclined towards certain skills and abilities, if they continued to build upon that advantage there would be nothing stopping them. He should know, but his talents lay elsewhere. The notion that she might just play solely for enjoyment didn't cross his mind. Why do anything by half-measures? You should either strive to be the best or stop wasting your time.
Seriously, this boy needed to learn how to relax.][He tried not to think back to his own upbringing when she vaguely mentioned hers. Mistakes would bring stiff punishments..]
I'm sure it must. [To her self-deprecating humor he shook his head and nearly smiled again] I'm not sure that I would go that far. Having dedication is one thing, but it depends on how it's being applied. [Ie. She was barking up the wrong tree with the attempts at friendship. At least with him. Blue eyes following the hand gesture he found something else to add.] You have to be kidding... [If she meant to try passing on some of this knowledge on to him that is.]
no subject
[And she isn't joking now. Of course she had a feeling he wasn't going to take the offer, so instead, she giggles and rises from the seat to step away from it, crossing the room instead to take a gander at the other instruments that decorate it.
She pauses at a set of drums in the corner adjacent to where he stands, examining it closely to keep herself busy.]
If you could pick any instrument in here, which one would it be?
no subject
[Finding that admission a little surprising, since those of a more affable nature seemed to rely more on humor, ill-timed or otherwise. In a way he could appreciate that. If she had pressed it, he might have capitulated, his spirits were running higher than usual lately.
He watched as she inspected the other objects in the room. When she posed her question, he took a look himself, eyes lingering on a violin. Hadn't that been the instrument of choice for his step-brother? Also- they carried a level of prestige about them. Breaking his gaze he looked to the floor before meeting her eyes]
One that plays itself- or is capable of a digital output so I could incorporate one skill with another. [Ie. so he could make his own musical scores for his other projects] A keyboard would be the most conducive since they also can be programmed to produce a wide variety of tones.
no subject
Lo and behold... When Tifa presses down on the keys, it makes a sound. Less dramatic than the grand piano, but like a piano nonetheless. She presses some buttons and it now sounds galaxy-like.]
Oh, this one's fancy! Like we're flying in the stars like in the movies or something!
[This is definitely what he meant, right?]
Why not give it a whirl?
no subject
-well darn. It definitely isn't on par with the grand piano or it's rich tonal quality but the keyboard does have more versatility, and if you can play a keyboard you can play a piano. It wasn't long before she had found a unique setting and was testing it out.]
It would be appropriate for that sort of usage.
[Liking what he was hearing but not gushing about it. When the inevitable question arose, he gave a shrug and approached the indicated object. His resistance wasn't that hard to wear down today so he would indulge her just this once. It wasn't as if he had another way to show his appreciation for being allowed to listen to the impromptu concert.
Not making an attempt to actually play something, he ran his fingers along the keys, generating more of the galaxy-esque sounds. Then he started to fiddle with some of the buttons too. When he was done it started playing the preprogrammed demo songs.]
Most of these come with a setting like this, but you can edit in your own.
so sorry for the wait!
Now this is more like it!
[The tapping of her foot turns into a full bop.]
With one of these, it's like you could make a whole band. A one-man show.
[Oh no, she's getting ideas... and it's plain enough in the way she grins at him, even if she has a feeling his answer will be a vehement NO. :) ]
I'll forgive you, if you forgive me!
Heh, not that I could take credit for something that was already set into the system.
[At least she derived some enjoyment from it]
Theoretically speaking, but in practice I think not. Leave that for someone with real talent for music.
[Nice try- whatever it was she was trying for there.]
no subject
[Good thing there seems to be quite a handful of people here who are musically inclinedโshe won't have to bother him to join them in their musical endeavors, and he can just sit back and listen instead!
That does beg the question, though...]
So, what would you say you're talented at, if not music?
[Everyone's got a Thing.]
no subject
And it would have been hilarious to see her try and possibly succeed. Whether he attended or not was another story, but it would be easier to swing.]I'm a computer programmer, entrepreneur, inventor, and a championship duelist. [Then just so no one starts envisioning him brandishing a foil] .. That last part is referring to participants of a game called duel monsters. Only those capable of the most complicated strategies are able to really compete.
Those are the things I excel at. [Also insults. When he's so inclined]
no subject
[Wait for it...
...
....]
You mean Pokemon?
[TIFA NOT EVERYONE IS A POKEMON TRAINER]
I'm so sorry for this Tifa
[She seemed to puzzle over the idea for a few moments, but Kaiba had no way of predicting what would follow. The whole Pokรฉmon thing was kind of a sticking point with him, both because they had access to their monsters and he didn't.. and he wasn't on the best of terms with some of the trainers he'd met.
So when she made the innocent mistake he huffed and moved away from the instruments in a huff, his voice booming out the following:]
No.. I mean Duel Monsters, not those cheap knockoff, off brand wannabes!
never be sorry!!
But calling the Pokemon cheap knockoffs?]
Every world is different! Sorry, didn't realize.
[Although she doesn't seem too upset by the fact that she had mistaken them with one another. In fact, she giggles at his huffing and puffing.]
You should tell me about them sometime. I think it'd be fun!
So patient with his hangups. LOL!
The trainers were too full of themselves from Kaiba's perspective.
And considering who he is... well. he was an expert in the field of ego]Hmph, they are.
[Not even feeling like refuting the different 'world' theory]
Someone should, and seeing as I'm the only one who can...
[He raised his left arm which has his duel disk strapped to it and pulled out a card to show it to her]
These are duel monsters. They don't come from inside a pokeball, and I currently can't really summon them since the device required isn't functioning.
[Maybe he wasn't going to go into a full rundown now, but he wanted her to at least know that differences existed]
