"Careful! Don't scare them off." Since he still has food, they won't be running away just yet, but he still doesn't want his lesson ending prematurely.
"And yes, I am. They understand our language, and they have the dexterity necessary to write, so it should be just a matter of teaching them how. Then we can communicate with them on a deeper level." Sam slowly reaches out to stroke some of the more frightened ones, making soothing sounds.
"It's worth a try, anyway." Not like he's got much better to do.

"How long have you been working on it?"
He's curious. It's an interesting idea.

"Would you like to feed them, too?" Perhaps it can serve as an apology for startling them earlier.
no subject
"How do I do this?" he asks as he rocks back.
no subject
"It helps if you make yourself look smaller, less scary, but it's fine if you just stay still." With that leg, he understands why he might not want to sit down -- he might not be able to stand up again, right?

After some time of quiet stillness from him, and some friendly encouraging from Sam, one of the Smeargles cautiously approaches, sniffing the mushroom in his hand before gently pulling it from his grasp with its paws. It darts off, sitting down a short distance away to eat its treat.
no subject
"Well, that wasn't so bad," he decides, once the Smeargle has scampered off. He straightens then, feeling it finally safe to move, and flashes Sam a crooked smile.
"back pain" = canon "untreated back injury" = my headcanon explanation btw :P
In the present, he just chuckles in return, continuing to feed the Smeargles treats.
"You don't have much experience around animals, I take it?" How unsure he is around the Smeargles seems to suggest it. His first instinct was to say 'Pokemon', but he's aware that most folks around here call non-human creatures 'animals', so he'll go with that.
works for me!
"Otherwise, no," he finishes, as if that wasn't answer enough. "I think the closest I've gotten here have been exchanging nods with Raihan's little dragon thing." And help Tifa kick a nest of the cat-rabbit-bird-things off of the roof of Heavenly Blanc, not long after they'd all arrived here.

"Anyway, these Smeargles are pretty harmless as long as you don't make them feel threatened. Just be gentle with them." He's seen their teeth, but has never been on the receiving end of them; being kind to animals is basically his default state. (The same strategy doesn't work with all the wildlife here, as proven by his encounter with the piranha-stubby on his first day, but it's still his go-to.)

Rather than tell Sam that, though, he just hums, before, "You've never seen a cat before?" Or, more importantly, his world doesn't have cats?

Finally, he decides on, "You've seen the critters some of the girls are keeping as pets, yes? Maybe small -- maybe seven pounds? -- with big ears and wings?" A beat. "I think there's a nest or two of them near Heavenly Blanc still, too."
He shrugs, before getting back on track. "The ears look like they belong on what we'd call a rabbit. The wings, a bird. The size and the fur and the retractable claws, though? That part's cat."
no subject
"So cats are four-legged furry animals with claws?" That's perhaps a bit too broad of a description, but it's the idea he's getting from Damien. "There are a few Pokemon like that."
no subject
After another pause, he asks, "I'm assuming you're from the same world as that boy, though? Raihan?" He's mentioned Duraludon being a Pokemon and all, so it stands to reason, he thinks.
no subject
"I'm not sure, I don't think so. The other Pokemon trainers here... their world has Pokemon, but it's also slightly different than mine." The only big difference he knows about is his grandson, but if that's different, there must be other differences too.
no subject
"Somehow, I was expecting you to all be from the same place," he explains after a beat and wryly.

If they don't have cats or rabbits or birds, it perhaps stands to reason.
