[Oi oi, this vehicle has been commandeered in the name of the Phoenix Pirates, get your ass out of the cockpit. ...or so Espio is sorely tempted to say, but nobody knows who the hell said pirates even are, never mind that he’s associated with them, so why bother? Still he was happily investigating the dragon-shaped jet, which is pretty cool on the basis of it being a dragon-shaped jet, when suddenly this one asshole boards and apparently completely fails to notice him aboard.

Espio being Espio, it will not do to let his presence go unnoticed, so as soon as Kaiba seats himself he walks up behind him and leans against the back of the seat.]

I see you choose to sit with a flourish, and not like... I dunno. A normal person.

[If Espio had made such a bold and outlandish claim it would have been immediately rebuffed and openly mocked. You might get some points for alliteration but no phoenix worthy of it's mythological legacy would associate with the ilk of common thieves. For someone who didn't believe in all that fairy-tale nonsense he sure wanted to enforce that people respected these fictional creatures. cough. Admittedly, his observation skills might have been downgraded as he reverently ran a hand over the familiar control panel, not a knob, dial, or lever seemed to be out of place, so he was legitimately startled when pressure was applied to the back of the chair.]

Gah!

[Getting to his feet, he wheeled on the other male, readying himself for an assault that didn't come. Then he has to stand there, feeling foolish as he tried to feign indifference]

Heh- it's the only way to live. A better observation is why are you in my jet?

[Adding the emphasis in such a way to highlight his possessiveness. Take off would have to wait, as risking his own life was one thing, but risking someone else's.. even if it was this odd military lizard guy... was another. A quick look at Espio had him confused over other matters as well..]

[Well, he could try telling that to the Captain! If, you know, said phoenix happened to be present.]

Yes. Thanks for that. I noticed.

[His initial amused smirk at Kaiba’s startled reaction quickly disappears with that observation. His self-conscious, muttered response is accompanied by the unfurling and stretching of the offending body parts, the attention drawn to the wings making him realise they were aching again. Ugh.]

Anyway, why would I not investigate the random dragon jet that’s just sitting on a mountain?

[Wait. The captain is a literal phoenix? No one mentioned this before!]

So, these weren't just additional appendages you've always had that you could have been concealing..

[Stating the obvious once more, because seriously.. how does one just sprout wings? He couldn't resist staring at the draconic features. Since when do chameleons fly? Or commandeer jets? There were so many inconsistencies with this guy and Kaiba's general world view.]

Fair. I can't really blame you for that. It's exactly what I would do even if it wasn't my property. [Because dragons.] Along those lines.. if you need proof of ownership, my branding is literally all over this machine, and I can show you the inspiration for it. [Producing a card from his deck with the Blue-Eyes White Dragon emblazoned on it.] I'm the only one with these cards in my possession, as there were only 4 produced so it's become intertwined with my company as an icon.

[He might have got a little entangled with some off-worlder pirates during his world-hopping adventures, oooops.]

...Kaiba. They’re huge. Hiding them’s not gonna happen.

[If he’d had them before, he’s pretty sure Kaiba would have to be blind to miss them! Another stretch, before he furls them back up and shifting a little in an effort to be vaguely comfortable, leaning forwards to look at the card.]

Oh yeah... Lysandra said you were a trading card nerd. Not my thing - I can barely win at Triple Triad.

You’re telling me this thing is based on trading card art?

[That's just one of those things that happens. Apparently!]

[Tilting his head to one side like a sideways nod he had to give Espio that one]

They would have to defy physics. [Blind or highly distracted. In their last encounter he was neither, so this checks out. The wings like the tail Espio started with seemed to move too fluidly to be attributed to costuming. In fact the wings were close enough to eye level to get a front row seat at seeing the sinews ripple as they moved.] How.... did you even know how to move them?

Lysandra has been talking about me? Interesting. [Taking this to be good news, since maybe she would continue to learn more about duel monsters] Not familiar with Triple Triad.

That's the idea. [Pulling the card back to stow it safely away] Others would claim that the card itself is based on an actual creature that resides in an alternate dimension .. but whack jobs like that are more common than oxygen.

Intuitively... but it only goes so far.

[In other words, yes he can move them, but he can’t fly with them! At least not more than a few feet off the ground before falling.

What Kaiba has to say about dragons, however, warrants a puzzled frown.]

Um... are you... trying to suggest that dragons aren’t real?

Mm.

[It would take time to get the hang of them, and strengthen the muscles associated with the wings etc. He oddly found himself wanting to touch them but he didn't have the audacity to either take it upon himself or ask]

... Right. What was I thinking trying to talk reason to a guy that claims to be a chameleon. I should just accept that everyone else is mad and I'm the only rational being.

[Rolling his eyes]

I bet you'd buy that nonsense about how in ancient times, they used to trap monsters inside stone tablets in order to use them in combat later....

You do know there’s a dragon trainer living here too, right? Weird dragons, given the ones I know would kill you in seconds, but still dragons.

[...stone tablets? Monsters? Hmm...]

When it comes to other worlds, at this point I’d believe just about anything. I hit the ‘seen it all, stopped caring’ threshold a long time ago.

[Giving the other a contemptuous look. Is this the face of someone that doesn't know there's someone running around calling themself a dragon trainer?]

I would never confuse actual dragons with the creatures he pals around with. [Please.] They look like rejected suggestions for high school mascots. [Lacking the ferocity and majesty of his favorite dragons]

Somehow, that doesn't surprise me that you could be so gullible.

[A beat]

More importantly, did you forget where the ground is? Get out.

I'd say 'jaded', but if you want to call me gullible because you can't cope with reality, be my guest.

[He pauses for a moment, then sits himself down in a seat, clearly deciding to just ignore Kaiba's demand. Nah, he ain't leaving.]

Think it even flies?

It's not reality I have a problem with.

[Ok, now this was just getting irritating. It was as if Espio has 0 survival skills. If this jet somehow failed the results could be agonizing if not fatal. At best it wouldn't turn on, at worst it might not be functioning properly. After attempting to bore a hole through the other with his gaze alone, Kaiba reached down to flap his coat out of the way so he could spin around and return to his own seated position behind the controls.]

That's what I was about to find out. I don't have a waiver for you to sign, but if anything happens, it's on you.

[Not as legally binding as he would like, but it got the point across]

What, you worried about me or something?

[Yeah okay, Espio gets the idea of ‘will risk self but not someone else’... but what are survival instincts? Espio’s never heard of them!]

I’m not gonna sue. Kinda need a legal system for legal consequences. ‘sides, if you hadn’t shown up, I was gonna try and get it moving anyway.

Don't flatter yourself.

[He scoffed, despite the truth. It wasn't so much that he'd formed an attachment to the chameleon but he didn't want to horribly maim anyone on his watch. Kaiba didn't really concern himself with legal issues. Not here.]

[He tried not to let that last part get to him, the thought of someone else flying his jet was unthinkable]

Then it's a good thing I showed up.
